long story short, i'm trying to encodee my copy of "the thin red line" to xvid. i've encoded a million and a half movies with DTS and depending on the length of the movie, i either make one copy of the movie with AC3 and one with DTS, or if its short enough, i'll encode the movie with both soundtracks.

my problem is with the movie mentioned above. ive never seen DTS with a bitrate of 1501kbps! i'm trying to encode the movie (2:50 long) with only the dts soundtrack (i already did the version with ac3 no problem) and i even set it to 2gb file size (i usually stick with 1.4gb but do 2gb every now and then if need be) but the soundtrack is huge!

with agk the best i can get is something like 143kbps for the video track. obviously this isnt acceptable. so is there any way to tell agk to compress the dts track down a bit to compensate for the video quality? ive never even seen a dts track with such a high bitrate. theyre usually between 4xx and 7xx.

suggestions? am i hopeless?

Even if your HD is FAT32 you could raise your size to 2/3 or 3/4 of DVD, if NTFS 1 DVD is possible. You can use the reverse calculator to get the size and the bitrate :)

Auto inside AGK no :scared:
Outside if you want to try transcoding DTS to DTS it should/could? be possible via Foobar/Belight-besweet ... use search in the audio section.

Also if you don't want to redo the comptest until satisfaction you can re-use the video stream from your ac3 encode; that will be possible with Vdubmod. You will need to disable the AC3 stream, mux the DTS stream and save the new file in direct stream copy mode; search the guide for muxing/demuxing inside VDM.

thanks for the reply, but one problem. isnt the max file size for a dvd 2gb? i thought u cant have a file larger than that. also, i use my dvd's on a standalone player, and i dont think a standalone will be able to read a 4.7gb single file.

i know how to mux/demux, and i thought of using the video from my ac3 encoded version and just replacing the ac3 track with the dts, but that would bring the file size up substantially past the 2gb mark.

any more ideas? or for that matter, am i wrong about the 2gb file size max for read/playback purposes?

(i'm using ntfs, so file size on the comp isnt an issue, just on the dvd and in the standalone player)

You are right about the 2Gb size limit for SAP but it is quite easily done by splitting your big file in 2 or more chunks with VDM.

Load your file in VDM save as/ in direct stream copy mode and check "segment output size" and use the limit size you want; I use 700Mb or less. You are done :)

Happy encoding.

Don't know what kind of player you have, mine can play 4 gb files and more without problem. I think yours should as well.. just write the disk in UDf mode.
