when i play the xvid off of my computer, it seems fine, when i play some xvids on my philips, there are vertical lines all over the picture(not black bars, just lines)...sometimes its not too noticeable, but in dark scenes its impossible to not notice, any idea what might be causing this?

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Can you provide infos on your xvid files, IE by retrieving specs given by GSpot (the last beta) or other info tool; Gspot link: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Also post your logfile if encoded with AGK.

These infos can confirm that your file has some params not accepted by your SAP.

Hi!

The Philips 642 is limited in its playback ability of XviD-compressed .AVIs. If you read the documentation, you'll see that it can't properly process XviDs that were created using some settings, such as QPEL. It does a fine job of playing back DivX-compressed .AVIs...

I too would analyse the file you are attempting to play further, but you could try pressing the system menu button twice. That will sometimes render an incompatible XviD file watchable.

QPEL XviD movies are not going to work on the Philips DVP 642, on the manual is written that Qpel is not supported.
Update the firmware can really help, before, the 0531 firmware had big problems playing XviD movies, but not the 1109 or 0112 ones... but they have Macrovision, which 0531 doesn't.
Greetings!
