View Full Version : XviD erroneously encoding color video to black and white?

So, I've been trying to encode a VOB file to XviD for the past few days with ridiculous results. It seems, regardless of whether I encode from the VOB or choose the VOB from the IFO, that my video gets converted to B&W! I know the source is color, and I've tried encoding other sources (.avi files) without issue. I have also reinstalled all my codecs several times as well as reinstalling AGK but I've not been able to fix the problem. Any suggesstions?
Also, on a possibly related/unrelated note, whenever I play DivX3 video files in WMP, the color registration is off (i.e. the red channel is offset from the green and that from the blue) so all the colors are out of whack. Any relevence or thoughts on how to fix this?
Thanks!

And what's your decoder?

Yes, I checked to make sure the greyscale option was unchecked (it was). I was using Windows Media Player to decode the video, and that seems to have been the problem. I opened the video in VLC and the color returned.
So, something is definitely wrong with WMP and its ability to decode XviD and DivX3. Would a reinstall of WMP help or is there a deeper problem here?

It's probably not WMP - it's more likely the decoder it uses to render the video that needs adjustment.

OK, so how do I go about repairing the decoder WMP uses?

You will first need to determine which it's using. I'd suggest installing ffdshow which will more easily allow you to both determine and control which decoder WMP uses. Once it's installed, you can right-click the tray icon that will appear while a video is playing, select "ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder," then select Info. You'll see what codec the file was created with as well as which decoder is currently in use. From there you can click Codecs to select decoders from a drop-down list for playback of different type files (it will require a restart of WMP to make a change take effect).
You may even find that the installation of ffdshow alone will solve your problem.

I agree wiht CWR03, give ffdshow a try.
And, IMO, change media player..
