View Full Version : Drive troubles after ARccOS rip.

Recently I had some trouble ripping "Fun with Dick and Jane" due to the ARccOS protection. I tried several differnt methods and was finally successful. My problem now is that on the machine that I used after I able to rip that disc I can't seem to rip anything else now. I either get an IO error or, if the rip does complete, DVD Shrink cannot read the ripped files. I can rip no problem on another machine.

Any ideas on what I could do to "remove" whatever corruption occured that is causing me problems. I'm assuming one of the apps I used changed something that is causing this problem. Then again the drive could have developed problems at that moment as well - but I'd consider that a big coincidence.

Prior to this all I used was DVD-Shrink and DVD43. During the process of trying to rip that movie I installed DVD Decrypter, VOB Blanker, IFOEdit, PGCEdit, DVD Fab Decrypter, aand AnyDVD (PGCEdit & DVD Decrypter were the tools that allowed to to eventually rip that disc)

Hi Michael,

What program(s) are you using to "rip" that are coughing up that i/o error or that produce files that Shrink cannot read?

I presume that you have uninstalled any of the recently installed possibly offending programs, reinstalled the one(s) you need, & rebooted?

Yes, I uninstalled all the programs I listed and reinstalled DVDShrink and DVD43 which is what I was successfully using prior to this incident. On a possibly related note, I belong to a closed group which trades in mp3's. We use a program to validate the files we download from other members. All the new downloads I have are failing the validation process.

Also, after uninstalling all of the software noted, I also "removed" the DVD drive in Device Manager and rebooted to have it install again. I am using Windows 2003 on the machine in question.

Did you try performing a "System Restore" back to the last time things were working properly on that system?

(Although it won't help your present situation if you don't have "System Restore" already activated - "System Restore" is, by default, turned off under Windows 2003, but it can be activated - See the following link:

No, I didn't do a system restore. And, with all due respect "System Restore is, by default, turned off under Windows 2003" is not a true statement. It is a hack. At least I think so, considering that you have to use a Windows XP to install it on 2003. I avoided tweaking "outside the box" to prevent issues that may crop up. Looks like it didn't work though.

Hi Michael,

Cool that you're using Windows Server 2003

It does seem that something is fouled up with your DVD43, possibly even your Shrink, installation.

Someone once said that if you install enough programs on your computer, sooner or later you're bound to start having problems. When this happens to me, I sooner or later start over, reformat my hard drive, etc., etc. If I were smart I would ghost my hard drive ever so often. Unfortunately, no one's ever accused me of being smart :(

If something is wrong with the installation of your decrypter, you might want to start using a different tool that does the same thing.

You also might want to ask the moderator of this "PC Hard & Software" section to move this thead to the more trafficked Decrypting section. You might get more responses from people who use DVD43.

Yeah, my thought was that something had changed at a very ow level of thr OS. I was just hoping that it was a known issue and someone might have an easy fix for me. And I am thinking a reintallation is in order.

I had "planned" to do a ghost image for just such an occuance, but...well...never got around to it.

I either get an IO error or, if the rip does complete, DVD Shrink cannot read the ripped files.This sure sounds like you're dealing with either "ARccOS" and/or "RipGuard" copy protected DVDs. What are the Titles and Regions of these recently attempted backups?I can rip no problem on another machine.Is this the case with the same specific DVDs that are generating I/O errors, etc. or just other DVDs?

I had three different discs that would not rip on the machine in question, but would rip on another machine. They were region 1 discs of Bewitched, Sleepy Hollow and Cinderella Man.

Assuming all other things are equal on both machines (same ripping software being used, etc.), you might want to try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on the problematic DVD-ROM reader/burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...

Hmmm... Just installed the newest version of DVD43 and the first rip has turned out OK. I think I need to do a little more testing. Though.

Is this "newest version of DVD43" the same version that was already on your "other machine"?

No, I was running v3.7.0 on both machines. Updated to v3.8.0 on the problem machine and it is working now. That's not to say that it couldn't have been something else that fixed it as I had tried other things as well.

That's not to say that it couldn't have been something else that fixed it as I had tried other things as well.Well that eliminates the possibility of a good controlled experiment ("all other things being equal") but, the important thing is that you've eliminated the problem. Congratulations ;>}

@Psycho41

Ditto. Congrats.
