I've tried several Linux distributions, and so far, despite numerous modifications, only Fedora seems completely compatible with my Pentium 820D, Intel 945PSN PC.

I'm very impressed with Fedora Core 5, but there are currently issues with multimedia playback, which is one of the things I'd like Linux do to.

Is there another distro which supports the i686 architecture and fully supports the Intel integrated audio as well as Fedora that allows installation of Real Player, and playback of MP3 etc?

Ubuntu and a few others are very supportive of multimedia, but they aren't entirely compatible with my PC and cause all manner of unusual and annoying bugs.

did you try gentoo? or any distribution with custom kernel? or you can build your own kernel:

I saw Gentoo mentioned as I searched for different versions but haven't tried it yet. What are its unique features?

I hadn't considered building my own kernel, but that might be worth doing.

Thank you for the advice.

:thanks:

Best read here :)

http://encyclopedia.tfd.com/Gentoo+Linux

Gentoo is not a easy distro like ubuntu. be sure to get the 150 pages installation guide.

I downloaded the installation cd and gave it a preliminary look. I can see why you reccomended it. It is extremely customisable, will probably do the trick, and I will receive an education in the process : )

I will get the guide and study it before proceeding further.

Thanks very much for the information.

An update:

Taking your advice, I built my own kernel based on the 2.6.16 series, customised for my machine. I also compiled a Nvidia driver from scratch for my new kernel and things work much better now.

One glitch: the audio. Any suggestions on how to improve Linux audio when using the Intel HD audio that comes with the 945PSN?
