Does anybody have infos (chipset) for this player ? It's soon (April 27th) available at Aldi Germany > Productpage (http://www.aldi-sued.de/product_02/product_172.html).

Here is a short review in german at > golem.de (http://golem.de/0604/44821.html) , but not too detailed.

I will keep a look out for this player in the UK...

I need a std-def player with HDMI and Nero Digital certification....

Needless to say I will take it apart ;)

found some more info in the german dvdboard.de forum (http://www.dvdboard.de/forum/showthread.php?t=98270):

Seems to be a Zoran ZV 778 with upscaler. they ordered a previewing model, so there will be a review soon.

My initial thoughts were it would be a Zoran chip-set...

I was kinda hoping it would have been the new Vaddis 888 though. As it's rumoured to support 3-warp-point GMC ;)

oh it finally seems to be a 888 !!
Check the forum, they phoned with the distributor and found out it is the Zoran Vaddis 888 (36888). No reviewsample so far sadly but they hope to get it this week.

That's far more interesting...

On paper the 888 chip-set looks to be very strong. Offering (among other things) the following: -DVD Multimedia Processor
Vaddis 888 is an advanced DVD multimedia processor with an integrated state-of-the-art 8 channel Class D modulator which enables a new generation of DVD players featuring universal audio (DVD-A and SACD2.0).

The Vaddis 8 processor enables HDTV connectivity via HDMI and analog component HD-video with six 14-bit 165Mhz video DACs.

It also offers SD-to-HD upconversion enabling HD content from standard DVD discs. The HD-JPEG feature enables display of high definition JPEG images. Not bad eh?

so the xvid is playing fine, the nero file is playing but some pixel hang till next keyframe (at least i suppose it's got to do with the next keyframe :) )

Bad thing is that external mp4 subtitles like .srt are displayed nearly in the middle of the picture and not at the bottom, but it let's you choose which one to use with the file.

.ogm video files not recognised (i suppose the extension ogm is ignored).

For further questions please tell me what i should test. i burned the divxtest.com cd v2, so just tell me which file of this collection to test.

well i had some (well two so far) xvid-movie files that show the same behaviour. perhaps i should check the files in the "H. Compatibility : Supported video codecs (all files supplied)" section of: http://www.divxtest.com/form/divxtest2_add.php?lang=eng

there are also some interesting notes on upscaling quality and abilities in the other forum posted above. but sadly i do not have any hd-device now.

for those who are interested, some folks "modded" the player so that it can now play files from an external fat32 usb-hdd/stick/device.

By chance has anybody tried hacking the player so it can connect to a ethernet network - either directly or via an NSLU2 or similar device?

the vadis 888 specs say: "and enables Ethernet connectivity with the MaestroLink chip". i don't think this chip (whatever it does) is put on this board. well and i can't say anything about that NSLU2-device (but itsn't this thing working the other way round) ? you would need a usb-2-ethernet adapter (which would have to browse smb shares and display them as fat32-hdd to the player). is that avail. somewhere ?

OK, I got a complete brain-freeze and decided to drive to Germany and pickup one of these babies (Cross the Belgo-German border direction Aachen, first exit, Aldi on the left). Quite impressed so far.

Nero Digital ASP works well, but only in standard profile. By patching the header, Cinema profile plays, but only in 2.0 AAC. 5.1 is not supported. ND subtitles are clear and under the picture frame on a 4:3 TV. I cannot confirm Whether other subtitles cover the picture as stated elsewhere.

Divx/Xvid work fine. I do not have any subtitled Xvid recordings, so can't pronounce on quality. Fairly easy navigation on screen. All MP4 needs an appreciable time to load but work well afterwards.

MP3 and AAC no problem. Rumour has it it also supports DVD audio, but who cares?

Normal DVDs play well, the built-in DD 5.1 decoder pumps to all six speakers.

VGA connection worked without a hitch, and really showed how crummy the computer LCD was compared to a CRT (not really a surprise for a Proview.)

In fact, I disconnected my Shuttle HTPC in favour of this, but I will keep it close at hand before I make up my mind..

Over the years I've generated various test files to test specific player features, such as: -
Aspect Ratio Signalling,
B-VOP's with packed bit-stream,
B-VOP's without packed bit-stream,
MPEG-4 video with MP3 audio in MP4,

Firmware 2.0 is out with a lot of fixes

most notable is the correct placement of external subtitles and they have a dark background now. And the Audio-CD bug is fixed that caused the next track to be played 0,5sec at trackchange.

thegeby
21st June 2006, 14:31
Well, a 3.5" worked, so I would guess you're OK:D

I did the power supply hack, as well, bridging the two contacts as shown in the "German pictures". It was possible to fit a connector from a USB bracket (after some judicious paring of the plastic) above the VGA connector in the back allowing for external access. I have not tried to connect both a USB stick and a VGA monitor simultaneously, but would imagine that is could be tight.

So far I have watched films from a Secure Digital card, a USB stick and from an external hard drive. It worked.

Hi thanks for the prompt reply, im not actually using one of these boxes i have a LG but it has the same chipset on board and a usb port on the front. Ive tried my mp3 (20gb fat32 Iriver H120) player that appears as a HDD in windows but it isnt recognised (though the ipod is but that cant be read) so im trying to find if its a implementaion issue down to LG or if theres some special set of encloure chipset/drive/formatting you need to get this to work, as there is with the Philips 5690 (different DVD chipset i know).

What enclosure do you use ?

thegeby

It is just a cheapo Q-tek USB-to-IDE. You could check if your USB port delivers voltage on the 5V contact. That was an issue on the Tevion.

does it display xvid that are hdtv resolutions .. mainly 720p ? also the same with transport sreams , will it play high res ts files ? mainly 720p but some 1080i .

i need to know this as my parents are buyign the 40" 1366x768 LCD from aldi next thursday when this is on offer, and i stock a whole lot of hdtv res content on my home pc but its way too far to just cable it thru to were the new lc tv is gonna be , and i seen this HDMI dvd player and my eyes lit up, if this can actually play high res ts and xvid, and not JUST upconvert lower ones, then this is a dream come tru for me !!

i dont like high res xvid too much tho, x264/avc just jumps up and down over xvid in quality , so mainly i wanna know if it could play these high res transport streams ?

Hi NEOgeo,

Sorry to disappoint you... The Tevion is fitted with an Zoran Vaddis 888 chip-set which is capable of decoding std-def MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part2 (SP/ASP) sources only.

It can however, up-scale std-def images to pseudo hi-def looking images.

Take lid off. Facing the front of the player The USB connection is on the right of the right PCB. It is marked.
solderwires form USB socket as in picture. The black wire on the left is just a bridge. I actually soldered the connectors together instead of using a wire. There is just enough space on top of the VGA connector to fit a USB socket. I got mine from a PC bracket.

Hi all,

I'm also new to the forum, having came across it after buying the aforementioned player.

I got mine on Saturday, but had to take it back as it wouldn't recognise any of my recordable CDs/Dvds and whilst playing my normal DVDs the picture kept screwing up.

Aldi took it back no questions asked, the second unit I got was much better, I got a mate of mine to solder a USB to it and it works ok. The only problems I have noticed is that the sound occasionally goes out of sync on some xvids after playing it for a while, this seemed to be fixed after a firmware update for some files but not all.

Also has anyone noticed that you have to play about with the picture settings quite a bit to get the video to play in it's aspect ratio, Personally I like to watch my movies as they were intended but this player automatically tries to fit the picture to your screen which is really annoying, I've turned it off but it's not perfect for some files when set to original.

Thats my two cents about this player, I'd love to hear about any other issues other people have had.

Hiya,

i burned the two (i think files) onto a normal CD
Turned on DVD player, opened drawer and put in CD
It then asks if you want to update - say yes (or whatever the affirmative option is)
After a min or so the cd tray will open - remove the cd - DONT do anything else...
...now leave it for another min or so and it will reboot and ouila all done!

Hello,
Looking for a little help on the USB issue.

I've soldered on a usb port but nothing is happening.

How do you tell if you've done it successfully - does a message appear on the menu?/how do you access the USB interface?

Does the USB device need to be self powered? I've tried a USB card reader formatted to FAT 32 (unpowered) and got nothing. I've also tried an ipod (own battery power) and also got nothing.

I'm assuming that I've got something wrong with my connections. I've used a USB with 5 cables and soldered them on as per the pictures going around:
Facing the front of the player and counting from the back to the front they're soldered to the USB part of the motherboard in the order:

red,
white,
green,
black1,
black2 (unsoldered and loose)

I've tried removing black1 and soldering black2 in its place, but nothing works.

Anybody know about USBs - are the colours always standardised, what do Black1 and Black2 do - should they be united and soldered as one?

Also, I've seen the picture with the 'bridge' cable. Is this needed and what does it do?

Many thanks - I'm sure I'm not alone in being puzzled by this one. ;)

You would need to bridge the two connectors to the left of the "red" connection with a thin blob of solder or a thin wire. It should show up as an alternative "USB" in the menu when you press the card/DVD button

Hello Everyone and thanks for your help with the USB -which is now working.

For anybody else out there, here's my experience, an empirical account of what I did, plus a "how to" on getting an ipod to work so that you can use is as an external drive and watch videos etc. off it.

I'm running the version 2.0 firmware (iso image only, burnt to CD at minimum speed using Nero, faster burn with img file on disc too failed for me).

1.
Firstly, wire as above in SeeMoreDigital's picture:
red,
white,
green,
black1,
wire 5, (also black) left unsoldered and loose.

Bridged red circled connectors with a blob of solder.

2.
Press CARD/DVD button on remote to select the USB port.
Initially, the port could not be read i.e.: didn't come up in the menu. :scared:

However, the new USB socket carried power (when plugged in, ipod lit up) and text on screen flashed up to indicate that a USB device was present when the ipod (or card reader I also used as a test), was plugged into the socket or removed.

3.
To be able to access the USB socket, insert a data card into the front of the DVD player in the supplied card reader slots, and then attach the USB device. When the CARD/DVD button was pressed, BOTH the data card in the front slot and the card reader in the USB socket were selectable from the menu.
However, the Ipod wasn't being read at all.

4.
To use the ipod as an external drive do the following: (I have a 4Gb Black Ipod Nano, firmware 1.0 (currently, later versions screw up audio book playback - don't upgrade unless you have to, downgrading is a hassle). DO NOT attempt to partition an ipod.

You need to put the Ipod into disc mode to use it as a drive. To do this:

a) Reset the ipod by pressing the centre wheel button and menu button together, and holding it down until you get a picture of the Apple logo (takes about 5-10 seconds). You won't loose any data or playlists etc., but you will loose your preference settings.

b) With the Apple logo still on screen, press the centre wheel button and the play button together for another 5-10 seconds until the screen changes and tells you that you are in disc mode. (To get out of Disc mode later, hold the centre wheel button and the play button together for another 5-10 seconds.)

c) Plug the ipod into your PC and select it in My Computer/Explorer (or whatever the Mac equivalent is) and just create a new folder and then dump your video files in it.

d) Plug the ipod into the DVD player, press the CARD/DVD button and navigate the menu to open the new video folder and enjoy.

e) Note: My experience is that:
The DVD player will not read the ipod at all unless it is in disc mode.
After 'introducing' the USB socket by using it in tandem with the front card reader, it can then be used on its own (i.e.: doesn't subsequently need a card in the front card reader as well).

Lengthy, but hope this helps someone. :D

Forgot to mention that you can also play the music files off your ipod through your DVD player while in the disc mode as above.

The mp3 files on the menu have the ipod's random file names, but the Tevion displays the proper song tags once you start playing the file.

Anybody know how to get the Tevion to display a list of the mp3's ID tags rather than the directory's files names?

Anyone got a photo of how they have mounted the USB socket or have you got it on fly-lead out the back of the player?

Cheers,
Baz

On top of the VGA socket. You may not be able to use both VGA and USB simultaneously.

Hi All,

Newbie here!

I too bought the Tevion DVD Player 8000 and am impressed with my purchase. I did the USb hack which is working well. I am now looking at buying an external hard drive to store my movies and am wondering if the player will recognise your bog standard hard drive as most of the external hard drives now require windows operating system.

Any suggestions must appreciated. :)

If it's a USB hard drive it does not require Windows. The player should recognise it. The only problem might be the file system used. You may need to format it to FAT32 instead of NTFS.

Got one of these a couple of months ago, what a bargain £40 and it plays anything. I now burn all my downloads as data and can get 6 full movies on a disc.

The picture is perfect on my 50 inch lcd hdmi.

I would recommend this dvd player to anyone

Probably does not have enough power on it's own. DOes the hard drive use an external power supply? If not then the USB might not supply enough juice to power the drive up correctly.

Yep... Most probably a power issue ;)

this is a laptop hard drive, 2.5" without power, you recommend a 3.5" one with the power supply ?

this is a laptop hard drive, 2.5" without power, you recommend a 3.5" one with the power supply ?Yes... I would recommend an external HDD with optional power input.

My brother in-law runs a couple of 2.5" Western Digital USB2 HDD's (encapsulated in blue rubber cases) for use with his lap-top. They both have an option to be powered externally.... Of-course, every 3.5" USB2 HDD needs an external PSU.

Here you go...

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=199

If you look to the bottom of the "specifications" section, you'll see where it refers to an "optional" 5 volt DC input.

Anyone knows if there is an Aldi Or Lidl in Holland that still is selling the Tevion 8000 or Silvercrest 6515?

if anyone still reads this topic? i have a question.

i fitted the usb mod today and when i tried it the usb symbol came up but it just kept flashing "loading" and nothing happened.

anyway i used swissnife to cut the drive size down to 100gb and all worked fine.

just wondered how large i can go with the drive size before it wont load again. the drive is a 250gb

thanks gav
