View Full Version : Burning DVD's with NERO takes longer than it should
Islander1990

Hi I am new to burning DVD's. When I first got my computer, I could burn a full DVD at 4X in about 14 min. Now, it takes 45minutes regardless of the media and 9 times out of 10, it is a bad burn. What would cause this? I am getting frustrated with the whole thing. HELP PLEASE!

Hi!
Would you please be good enough to post the NERO log here for one of your failed burns?
It sounds like your system may now have DMA turned off and has reverted to PIO mode...

Welcome to the Forum:
This is a common symptom of your drive's transfer mode being set wrong. You want "DMA" mode. Follow the instructions in this link's destination.
Check and set DMA mode (http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-05.html) (Don't mess with your registry, that's for the UDMA66 mode concerning Intel chipsets-- bottom of that page.)
If this doesn't fix you up, post back with more information/results.

How do I find the Nero Log??
setarip_old
20th April 2006, 04:28
Go to "My computer" , click C:/ProgramFiles/Ahead/Nero/NeroHistory.log
or if you're using NERO v.7.xxx:
C:\ProgramFiles\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log

Hope this is what you asked for.... I tried to change the DMA to on in the device manager but it didn't change. Hope the Log will show something else.
Thanks

The log confirms the other comments, you need to follow the previous advice and turn DMA on for the dvd drives.
setarip_old

You do have to restore your drives to DMA mode. If the previously described method for re-activating DMA hasn't worked for you, do the following (assuming you're running either WinXP or Win2k):
Remove the channel by going into the "Device Manager" and rightclicking on the pertinent channel(s) - and selecting "Uninstall".
Then reboot.
Then again go to the Device Manager and change the setting(s) to "DMA If Available"...
BTW You should remove your serial number form the beginning of your log posting.
Incidentally, the log you posted indicates a successful burn ;>}

I did what you told me to do, and now none of my 3 drives work. In the "Device Status" window in the device manager there is the following message for each drive:
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)
HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8483B
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)
and
This message is in the card reader status
Windows cannot determine the settings for this device. Consult the documentation that came with this device and use the Resource tab to set the configuration. (Code 34)
I am Totally screwed!!!

Then reboot.
I think you may have forgotten that part. ;). The Windows "Error Code 38" is generally in response to a configuration change followed by a failure to restart. This post was an hour old when I ran across, so hopefully, this is all it is/was, and my advice is no longer necessary. I will admit to doing this once or twice myself, and clogging the keyboard with hair and saliva. Give up, go to sleep, wake up, reboot, and everything's fine. If you tell anyone, I'll deny it.
Google up "windows error codes" and take a look-see for yourself; you never know, it might be a good page to bookmark. You'll get as much help in the Forums as you can stand, usually, but the search button is still your best friend.

I did finally get my drives working. Thanks! I tried to burn a DVD with the new settings and it did burn faster. The movie would play on the computer but when I tried it in our DVD player, it said there was no disc. Here is the log

This had the earmarks of a classic media compatibility issue. It's not what's on the disc, it's the fact that your standalone cannot see the disc, period.
Check out the database of player/media compatiblity over at *videohelp.com*, you'll probably find that the media you've just used cannot be "seen" by your standalone.

Further to what "ammck55" has suggested:
1) I see where you've switched from a high quality (Maxell) brand on your earlier burn to a "no-name" (Disc Manufacturer: DAXON0 - 16S) brand that may be of poor quality
2) Burn process completed successfully at 12x (16,620 KB/s) Although it was a successful burn (as was the one in your first log), it's likely better/safer to burn at a lower speed (e.g. 4X or 2X)
What is your brand and model number of standalone DVD player? Have you successfully played any DVD-Rs on it?
Glad to see you managed to get DMA turned on again ;>}

It may be a media problem. I have burned 2 successful DVD's using the Maxell DVD's since you have fixed my burner settings . I always thought that BenQ dvd's were good. What is the difference between + R and -R? Can some burners work better with certain DVD's? Mine is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B .
Thanks for all your help...it is MUCH appreciated.

+R and -R isn't usually a compatibility problem with burners as long as the burner is a dual format. The problem may later arise that you can't play them on standalone players or other DVD-ROM drives. Check http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers to get an idea of what would best suit your purposes.
