View Full Version : How to improve audio in AVI file?

Hey, guys
I've got an AVI file (XVID) with the recording on the live seminar. It has very low quality audio :(
What I need to do is extract audio from the AVI file, process it (get rid of hiss, somehow improve quality, raise volume) and then
combine audio with my video again.
I have tried VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod and have some synchronization problems.
There are tons of guides out there, however, I have no idea what programs to use whatever I need to do.
I'd be really grateful for your suggestions.
Also, if you know how to improve low quality speeches, that'd be really awesome. So far I've used dehissing, some parametric EQ filter that seemed to improve the speech a bit and then normalized it.
Thanks,
Krolikovod

Hi!get rid of hiss, somehow improve quality, raise volumeTry using (freeware) "Audacity" or (commercial) "GoldWave".I have tried VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod and have some synchronization problems.Load the file into VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod, or NanDub.
Set BOTH "Video"(VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod and NanDub) and "Audio"
(VirtualDub and NanDub - VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list") to "Direct Stream Copy".
A) If the difference between audio and video is constant throughout the
video:
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Interleaving" (For
VirtualDubMOD, rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select
"Interleaving")
Under "Audio skew correction", set an appropriate number of
milliseconds (positive or negative) in the box labelled "Delay audio track
by"
Save with a new filename
B) If the difference increases as the movie plays:
From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Framerate" - and
select "Change so video and audio durations match"
Save with a new filename
Let us know of your success ;>}

Thanks a lot!!!
It looks like everything is working fine now!
I use VirtualDubMod - get MP3 out of the XVID file. Edit it.
then use VirtualDubMod to have a second audio stream.
I also set option B -select "Framerate" - and select "Change so video and audio durations match"
And then just save as an AVI file without recompression.
Audio quality still sucks though :(
Seems to be exactly what I needed!
Thanks a lot, setarip_old!

Yep, it's gonna take me a while to try to "pull the sound" in the recordings - it's that bad.
Bud at least I know the right tools for the job :))
So thanks again.
By the way, is there a difference between NanDub and VirtualDubMod for my purposes?

For the purpose and file contents you described, you can use any one of the three programs - VirtualDub, NanDub, or VirtualDubMOD...
