I'm currently selecting a new player and ended up with these 2 models.
In fact I had already selected the Pioneer but the store in which I ordered it gave me an extra discount if I take the Denon (also the Pio is only due to be released in one month or so :( ).

I would like your opinions on which is the best player, given that I am looking for an excellent DVD player which is also a very good Divx player.

Though everyone acknowledges that the Denon is excellent in PQ, sound, build, etc. I have read about several complaints regarding its use as a divx player, namely subtitle support. The Pioneers seem to be more "flexible" machines, with lots of firmware mods available.

These are the divx features I believe are the most important:
- very good PQ and sound;
- divx with ac3 support;
- divx6 support;
- subtitle multiformat support (.sub, .srt, ...) with accentuated characters is a must;
- future proof (with new firmwares to support new features and formats).

Thanks for your help and oppinions.

The Denon will (of course) offer better MPEG-2 video playback and improved up-scaling capabilities, given it's fitted with an Faroudja DCDi processor and an HDMI output.

However, if you require a "flexible" MPEG-4 player (also with HDMI), the Pioneer DV-696AV would be the one I would go for!
