Ok,here's the deal.I want to tranfer VOB files to MPEG files, but I am unable to understand exactly what I need and how to do it.What I am wanting to do is rip movies that I own to my harddrive and edit the scenes with new music. Is there anyone who can help me?I am about as clueless to this as one can get but I really want to learn.

This could be as simple as importing your files to the Vegas timeline and replacing the audio stream with one of your choosing. It could also be far more complex; I've never used Vegas for this task. The best thing I can do is point you at two threads from the Sony Video-Vegas support forum that I googled up. Here's a tip; when running searches in any database, you aren't always going to get a return that matches your keyword/s, sometimes you can strike gold by scrolling back through the older threads and visually examining their titles. Time consuming? Yes. Did I have to use this method to find the following links? Yes. Did it take longer than 5 minutes. YES! Is there more information where this came from? Of course. ;)

Vegas-Video's users forum (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=448754&Replies=7)--Topic discussed--Vob's, CSS, and Macrovision

Use DVD2AVI to convert the VOB files into DV AVI (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=450381&Replies=8)--Topic discussed--Conversion of DVD files to AVI before importing/editing

Those two threads cross-referenced some of the same information; there may be something there for you, there may not.

If you've some time inside the Vegas gui, this might come as easily as making a few clicks, if not, be prepared to apply some elbow grease, and a lot of time.

Check here in D9's NLE sub-fora for old threads on importing VOB/MPEG2 files into Vegas, and hit the net. Like I said, this may be simple, or as complex as making several moves beforehand in order to expedite the importation/editing of your files. Then again, you can scrap all this info and search out a different tool that might be easier for you to handle. Confused? Welcome to the club, but if you stay after this, you'll figure it out. Vegas is a good tool and gets high marks for being user-friendly; I wouldn't give up on it easily.

Really an editing question. Here's how I would go about it:

1. Rip with DVD Decrypter (assuming no ARccOS, if so, you'll need a more advanced tool - see Kill ARccOS in my signature). You can even rip the movie in IFO mode taking only the video, which will eliminate step 2 below. Doom9's guide on ripping with DVD Decrypter (http://www.doom9.org/dvddec.htm) is very good. Pay particular attention to the bit about stream processing and Demux.

2. (Only if you have ripped in file mode - skip if you have ripped in IFO mode and just go the video) Demux the Video and Audio with PgcDemux - available on the VobBlanker (http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm) site.

3. Remux in your new audio stream with Muxman - see link in my signature.
