Before I buy a DL DVD burner, it'd be nice to know if they'll be playable on my DVD players (Sony & JVC connected to a Mitsubishi HDTV). Can anyone tell me if they'll likely play just fine, or is the DL burning technology still young and not very reliable?

P.S. I'm most seriously considering a Plextor external burner - any thoughts on those?

Hi!

A couple of points, if I may:

1) DL DVD burners are not limited to only burning Double layered media (DVD9) - they can also burn Single layered media (DVD5)

2) I'd suggest you consider a burner that includes "bitsetting" capablility (either automatically or manually) regarding DVD+R and DL DVD+R burnable media (No such ability exists for -R media). "Setting the bit" of such media theoretically makes it appear to be a DVD-ROM (pressed rather than burned DVD), which all players bearing the "DVD" logo are supposed to be capable of playing

3) Presently, it appears that the only consistently reliable DL DVD burnable media is Verbatim DL DVD+R

I thank ya kindly. Those are valuable insights. Setting that bit to make it look like a DVD-ROM sounds rather desireable.

I thank ya kindly. Those are valuable insights.As always, my pleasure ;>}

(Verbose) It will be interesting to hear back from you, once you've purchased and begun to use your new burner...

I second setarip_old's reply. I have an NEC 2510a burner (meaning I can only get a max of 2.4x on double-layer burns, but I still love it) and have burned approximately 100 DL discs so far. All successful burns play fine in all four of my standalone dvd players (Sony 5-disc carousel, Apex AD-1500, Philips DVP642, and another, single-disc Sony).

As for media, I've yet to get a coaster for a Verb (about 35 burns) and have about a 80% success rate with Ridata discs. I always burn with ImgBurn (book-typed to dvd-rom) after editing junk out with VobBlanker and/or PGCEdit. When the Riteks goof it's usually at the layer break, either during the burn itself or I get an error message during the verify phase. Given the price difference between Verbs and Ridatas I still don't mind the inconsistency of the latter, especially since I can either get replacements from Newegg or an RMA from Ritek directly.

Good luck!
