all,
i hd created a hidden folder in xp and disabled all the permission to that folder. Even the files in that folder were also diabaled permission(all are @dult content ). Now am not able to see the folder with show hidden folder option enabled.
But the partition size shows that files are present i guess.
How do i recover the folder and the files ?
thanks

Hi,
By disabling all permissions, you seem to have disabled the permission that lets you see the folder & its contents as well.
Try this:
> parent folder > Properties > Security tab > Advanced button > Permissions tab > "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here" check box.
Make sure:
(1) above-mentioned check box is checked
(2) your user account (or a group to which it belongs) has the Full Control permission
If that doesn't work, you will need to take ownership of the parent folder, for which please reply back if you still cannot access that folder.

Well, in windows security you can always view a folder even if you can't get in. So if what you're saying is correct, you either deleted it, or installed a rootkit-style filesystem filter to hide it extra securely. (Or you just left it in a different folder than you thought.)
Try starting up with a linux livecd, like knoppix (if you can stand kde, I can't), gnoppix, or ubuntu. There's no way those could be affected by windows permissions or fs filters.

Well, in windows security you can always view a folder even if you can't get in. Foxyshadis appears to be right. There's a List Folder Contents NTFS permission and a List Folder special permission, but these have to do with viewing files and subfolders within a folder, not the folder itself. Also they work by denying access to the folder entirely, not actually "hiding" the files and subfolders.
@cjaar, I must confess that I am unable to replicate your problem, so do not know what to suggest.

From my experience, in XP, an administrator can always steal permission for any file or folder. Simply by going to properties and the security tab, an administrator can add themselves to the permission list, or failing that, can take ownership of the folder which in turn would allow them to access that folder.
I have done this many times and all without fail.
