This may be a really stupid question, but I've noticed that a lot of people in these forums (and the video codec shootouts) post screen captures from their source and their encoded video for comparison. I was wondering how people are making these screen captures. Is it just a matter of queuing up the video to the right frame in media player classic (or another player) and hitting printscreen? Or is there a program that will actually do this for you?

ffdshow is what I use - Fraps will also taks a screenshot of any DirectX-rendered game or video.

In MPC, not printscreen but save picture(image) in .bmp or .jpg
Also possible in VdubMod in lossless format (not .bmp but ...?)

if working with .vobs you can also use dgindex - seek to a frame - and save as bitmap - file > save as bitmap
