Resolution / Bitrate vs Full Screen Playback Quality

Can anyone tell me if there is any direct relationship between the resolution or bitrate that used in encoding and the qulaity of image when playback in full screen mode? I expect the high the resolution / bitrate the better output in full screen or it doesn't really matter?

there is a way. you must use Gknot.
1.Load your stats file into Gknot look down at the bottom where it says: video size/First Pass Size
I'm going to just copy and paste what it says in the gknot guide right here:
"Video Size / First Pass Size should be between 60 and 100% (so obviously the resolution I have chose for the stats file I've loaded to make this screenshot was way too high) . If it's above 100% you will not reach your filesize in the second pass. If it's below 60% the quality will not be good. If it's between 65 and 75% you will get the best possible results. If you're between 75 and 100% you could have chosen a higher resolution."
Also look at the bits/(pixel*frame), which means how many bits is each pixel getting per frame. Make sure you have your total movie time inputed, and then input your frames/second and look at the bits/(pixel*frame). here is the standard to make what you are encoding look good(again just pasted from the gknot guide which I suggest you read after reading this):
"It's not a good idea to go below 0.20 bits/pixel*frame
If you go above ~0.35 yo might not be able to reach your desired filesize
If you go for 1 CD stay close to 0.20
If you go for 2 CDs stay around 0.27
If TV bits/pixel*frame is below ~0.13 you should raise your bitrate (and go for more CDs). "
Gknot isn;t just a bitrate calc or an ecf file creator its a whole mess of great things to view your stats file and help you better encode, choose resolutions, have more control, etc. I only use parts of it which I soppose eveyrone does. Just use the parts of it that you think you need.

oh.. I like your reference of your name to Shenmue. :) just beat it 3 days ago starting on Shenmue 2. IF you didn't mean to make that reference well its jsut a character in a game called Shenmue for Dreamcast.

Regarding stats file, can you tell what is the different between the following 2 files? I found them after the finished the 2 passes of movie encoding via GKnot.
14/12/2001 05:44 16,882,228 PH.stats
14/12/2001 05:44 16,882,228 PH_1491_kbps.stats
Looks to me the creation time is exactly the same but GKnot tell a different result while loading the 2 files.

sure
I'm assumeing that PH.stats is the original stats file that you made using nandub. when you changed the curve compression and luma and keyframes and whatever you did using the stats file editor you saved the slightly changed stats file to PH_1491.stats. This file is the one that Gknot caculated FOR nandub to use for encoding. Its using Gknots compression algorymths and stuff like that instead of nandub, doens;t mean its better or worse, hasn't been proven one way or the other, but that's what it is. IF you look at the graphs for each stats file they will be essetially the same, but the PH_1491.stats will be slightly compressed. The creation time of the final avi will be the same yes, you just simply made a different stats file using gknot from the orginal nandub stats file
