View Full Version : 16:9 broadcast on 4:3 signal - how to encode

I have a standard definition TV capture of a wide screen format program that I would like to encode using autoGK and xvid. I've used the hidden setting and selected OVERRIDE INPUT AR and selected 16:9.

The problem seems to be that the network logo extends slightly below the 16:9 boundry of the program and AutoGK is picking this up. The result is that I get a small black bar across the bottom of my encoded file and everything in the program is slightly distorted (everyone has a slightly fat head!).

I'd like to use the FORCE CROPPING, but I don't know how much to take off of the top and bottom to get exactly 16:9.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance
Richard.

Richard you just have to select crop values where width/height approximates 1.77.

The tricky part is getting rid of the logo (guessing at the right crop value for the bottom) but AGK's Preview button is your friend here.

What I usually do is make a small snippet of the program (my editor is VideoReDo Plus) and experiment with IT first, otherwise it's a little time consuming especially as you're unlikely to get the cropping values right the first time.

I think you have 2 problems, the cropping problem, and the bad AR problem. I think laserfan has helped with your cropping problem. I think your "fat head" problem is caused by you overriding the Input AR in the Hidden Options.

In what format is the capture? It's an MPEG? And what's the DAR? If you don't know, open it in DGIndex and run the Preview. The top line of the Information Window that pops up will tell you. Or is it an AVI you captured? And what's the capture resolution?

One of the simplest methods to determine resolution and how much to crop is to install the full Gordian Knot, then open the file there. Under the resolution tab you'll be able to see what your changes will do immediately, and you can enter those same parameters directly into AutoGK for the same result.

You may use TMPGEnc's function "crop", just to see the pixels, you need to add manually in AGK.

Hi

This is for the black bar removal, refer to other posts for correct AR.
