I want to buy a dvd title (Ofelas) which is only available from Germany in R 2 PAL format. Will I be able to make a backup of it that I can watch on my equipment? I've been using DVD Decrypter and DvdFab Decrypter (the free version). TIA

Will I be able to make a backup of it that I can watch on my equipment?Although you haven't stated so, your question implies that you are in a non-PAL region.
If this is so, the answer is, although you may be able to rip the DVD as a "region-free" DVD, it will still be in PAL format. Therefore, if your "equipment" (which you haven't specified) is capable of playing PAL format, the answer is "Yes". Of course, if your "equipment" in not capable of playing PAL format, the answer is "No" - unless you also go through a fairly complex (set of) procedure(s) to also convert the DVD from PAL format to NTSC format...

Indeed, I am in the US. One of my players specifications page indicates is supports MULTI,NTSC and PAL systems, although it is region 1 specific. Thank you for your help.

If you have a multi format player, then simply make the rip region free. Use, for example, IfoEdit (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/), PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) or even DVD Shrink.

I think this is my case too.
Think of it the other way.
My player can play PAL and NTSC formats.
I have a NTSC region 1 DVD.
My drive is setted to region 2 (I would like not to change the setting).
So, you are saying that the decrypted files on hard disk can be made region free using IfoEdit, right?
But, how can I decrypt the disk?
I tryed DVDFab Express Free and it succeded. But the decrypted files can't be viewed with DGIndex - region mismatch error. Weird, uh? Wasn't DVDFab Express supposed to erase protections while copying?
I tryed DVD Decrypter IFO mode and job aborted - region mismatch error. It wasn't able to do the job even though I enabled "Brute Force".
Help, please!
This is the error I get with DVD Decrypter:
I/O Error!
