i rebooted and tried vob blanker..it crapped out as well..rebooted and tried newest dvdfab..seemed to do ok..am now at 88% encoding with shrink..so it must be a hardware glitch i guess with this new external burner..my cheapie fry's $20 special crapped the bed a week ago after over 100 backups...not too bad for $20 i guess..

Not too bad for $20? In the first place, you didn't save any money. Secondly, now you're having problems ripping.
Narnia is protected by Ripguard. I used AnyDVD to correct the problem. You can also rip an ISO with DVD Decrypter and strip out the image with VobBlanker. Then burn the finished file with Shrink. However, I did initially open the film using just Shrink, and it analized it completely. It could have been reauthored, and burned just the way it was.

my original burner was the cheapie..it burned over 100 backup dvd's..i thought for $20 it had been an incredible value..
this new burner is a LOT faster and only cost $39..so not too bad if i can get everything "going"
finished Narnia and Brokeback Mountain just now burning 8X dvd's at 6X and so far, they are playing just fine..so maybe it was just windows not wanting to cooperate this morning.. :)

As VWRacer above stated, Narnia is protected by Ripguard. DVDShrink cannot handle this one by itself.
The latest version of AnyDVD can handle it, though. As you eventually noticed.

In other words, I do not believe this was due to your new burner, and I doubt if it was a Windows error. Assuming you did not have the latest version of AnyDVD running in the background on your first attempt, your errors in DVDShrink were due to the latest variation on the Ripguard copy protection scheme.
In the case of this disc (as was also correctly mentioned above -- thanks VWRacer --), DVDShrink was able to analyze the disc okay. However, on its own, it would yield a CRC cyclic redundancy error if one tried to encode the entire disc.

I used PgcEdit with the PSL2 plug in v2.14 in Wizard mode. It uses DVD Decrypter to rip then cleans the resulting file of bad\unused sectors using Fix VTS or VOB Blanker, your choice. Complicated, but with the Wizard is easy. No problem with region 1 Narnia.

DVDFabDecrypter, the latest build worked just dandy.

Hi!Now just figure out how to link the longer main menu intro into the chain properly...if I may ask, what in this thread are you referring to? There is no problem making a Full Disk copy of "Chronicles of Narnia" by doing the following:
1) Rip with DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "File" mode (select "ALL files", NOT just "movie files) and then
2) Run the rip through VOBBlanker, set to "Process all files" and then
3) Compress with the program of your choice
Doing this, or several alternative methods (e.g. DVDFab Decrypter, AnyDVD, DVD95Copy, etc.) will result in a complete copy of the entire DVD, including active menus

Load the files with PgcEdit then look at VTSM 1, LU 1, 18. 19 is what the disc always shows for the main menu. 18 looks like it was supposed to be the version when the menu is first called but the coding prevents this.

If I'm looking at the same part you're referring to, it appears to be only the raw footage that's apparently being accessed for the active video in the middle of the main menu screen. If you load the "VTS_01_0.VOB" into Windows Media Player, or similar, and drag the slider to the end, you'll see what I'm referring to...

Look at the part just before that, the snowing portion that starts with the sky view then pans down then the menu delimiters show up. It sure looks like this was to be a first-play type of intro to the seamless menu loop. I'm playing with it to see what can be done to make that come up as the root menu. Simply redefining that segment as the root doesn't do it. segment 18 has 3 cells, the last 2 are the seamless looping that is also in segment 19. Look at the first pre command for segment 18. It sure look like some kind of conditional jump to segment 19. I don't know enough about DVD confitionals to trace and configure this properly.

I'd suggest you repost this in the "IFO/VOB Editors" sub-forum - where it will sooner/likely get the attention of the likes of "jsoto", "r0lZ", "mpucoder", "jeanl" et al...
**EDIT** Oops! I initially left out "jeanl" ;>}

Just noticed - there ARE two different versions of the active menu available. One is activated as "Root menu" and the other is activated as "Title menu"

i was able to rip it using DVD Decypter to an ISO file then i used FUW to convert to Xvid - this worked, however, i got all those informational messages in the movie like "this scene was filmed in the farthest reaches of blah blah blah..."
so i used DVD shrink on the ISO from DVD decrypter and it worked fine.

DVD Decrypter cannot cope with this title properly. I got warning messages about VTS1 still having ARCOOS protection when in PGCedit.
Latest version of DVDFab cured the problems.

AnyDVD (ver5.9.6) finds all the protection, yet when I rip w/DVDecrypter, Shrink results w/an error msg and will not continue. BTW, per other posts, the DVDecrypter protection checks are unchecked , ie: CSS, Macrovision, etc.
DVDFab Decypter handled it just fine.
Edit: BTW, new ver 1.25 of FixVTS released yesterday.

I had no problem with Narnia and AnyDVD. But, I didn't use Shrink, I used CloneCD to make a 1:1 copy of it to a dual layer disc. And I was using what we'd consider now to be an older version of AnyDVD.

I don't use Shrink with a movie of this lenght. However, it is a quick check to see if the dvd structure is correct and what the compression ratio is for full disk vs reauthor mode.
