View Full Version : Destination Folder Confusion

Hi, [Edit: I got some mixed up info in here, please skip down to see the real issues.]

I created and designated a folder as the Destination Folder for RB and I proceeded to backup a DVD of the movie "15 Minutes."

The next day I tried to burn a backup with Image Burn but I could not get Image Burn to accept the Destination Folder or anything in it as a source. I didn't know what file name to point Image Burn at. The Destination folder contained a bunch of VIDEO TS AND VTS .bup, .ifo, and .vob files. Image Burn seemed to want an ISO file.

Then I noticed a folder on the same hard drive as the RB Destination Folder that RB must have created because it wasn't there before. It was named DVD Shrink Target. In it was a single file: 15 Minutes.ISO.

I pointed Image Burn to that as a source and it's burning now. I will find out if this worked soon but in the meantime, I am confused about what happened.

My source for RB was a Decrypter File Mode rip on my C Drive. I had designated a Work Path on my D drive and the Destination Path on my C Drive. I didn't use the "Write ISO Image to Disk" from the RB Menu File.

Also, for the future, if I want to burn the backup in one continuous process without any user imput required, should I check the option for "Write ISO Image to Disk"? And if so, what file name do I enter into the "Select ISO File to be written:" box. Will it always be the name of the movie?

If you're using RB-Pro, you choose whether RB compiles an ISO by setting the flag in 'Mode|Output to ISO Image File". You can have RB automatically burn your disc if you check 'File|Write ISO Image to disk'. Enter anything you like in the ISO options window. The filename makes absolutely no difference, nor does the title, but the title is visible when you stick your DVD in a computer drive -- the title will show up as the drive name.

If you're using RB free, check out IFOEdit (http://www.ifoedit.com/). It can build IMG files from RB output (and ImgBurn will, of course, burn IMG's).

The directory that has all the IFO's etc is one step under the destination folder so if your destination is "C:\DESTINATION" you will find at the end of your processing that there is a directory called "C:\DESTINATION\DVDFILES" that has the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folderw within it. Assuming you named the output "MYOUTPUT" for the ISO you would find it in "C:\DESTINATION\MYOUTPUT.ISO".

I can't imagine how it could have been output to another directory...

Yes, if you select "Write ISO Image to Disc" and you have a blank disc in the drive, DVD-RB will create and automatically burn the ISO (using ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter -- if either are installed on your system) to disc.

Hi John,
Thanks for that explanation. I am using RB Pro. I see the selections you're referring to. I didn't notice the Mode/Output to ISO Image File before. When I just found it, it was unchecked.

However, it's not quite clear to me if the Mode/Output to ISO Image File and the File/Write ISO Image to Disk selections are meant to work together or independently, and if they do the same thing or what the difference between them is. It seems to me that they are doing the same thing.

In order to use File/Write ISO Image to Disk, do you have to have Mode/Output to ISO Image File checked, but Mode/Select ISO Output Options/Automatically Burn unchecked?

Also, would the text you enter in File/ Write ISO Image to Disk have the same effect as using Mode/Output to ISO Image File and entering the same text in Mode/Select ISO Output Options/Output Name or ISO Label?

And/or if using Mode/Output to ISO Image File, what should one enter in ISO Output Options/Output Name: and ISO Label: , if anything?

I hope my questions made sense and thanks in advance for any further help.

Hi jdobbs,

I had ripped the original DVD a few months ago and had just gotten around to finish backing it up yesterday. I think I got some things confused and gave some wrong information in my OP above.

I got the Rebuilder Destination Directory with the DVDFILES subfolder in it and VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS in there and it's on my C: drive.

However, I don't have an XXXXX.ISO file or subfolder in that directory. I'm thinking that might be because I hadn't selected "Output to ISO Image File" under the Mode menu.

- Does that make sense? and

- How do I burn using RB Pro or ImgBrn now?

MISTAKE IN WHAT I WROTE IN OP
What I burned today was an ISO of the movie I found on my D: drive in a folder named "DVD Shrink Target" (RB Destination is on my C: drive.) The backup showed some of those still images on some extras that DVD Shrink allows one to use. Now I'm thinking that ISO is something I made a couple of months ago with Shrink and I got it mixed up with what I was trying to do now with RB.

I'm not completely satisfied with the quality of this backup anyway and would still like to try it with RB Pro, but RB didn't make an ISO for me so I'm not sure how to proceed.

In order for DVD-RB to make the ISO you have to tell it to. It doesn't make it by default. You have to check the option under the MODE MENU that says "Output to ISO Image File". When that is checked, the "Select ISO Output Options" selection with become enabled. You can then click on that option and select "Automatically Burn..." on the dialog that will pop up. In that case the ISO will be created in the destination folder and it will be written to a blank disc that has been inserted in the writer.

Hi jd,

OK. Thanks for the info.

I'm starting the whole thing over. In "Select ISO Output Options" I entered the "name of the movie.ISO" in the top box and the "name of the movie" in the second box. I hope that was OK.

Most of the time it's best to let DVD Rebuilder name it. Depending upon how you ripped, it will select the Volume Label from the original disc. Look through the REBUILDER.TXT file and you'll see more detail.

There is a size limit for the volume label (31 characters) and while it seems to work with them, I don't think you are supposed to have space characters in the name.
