Try installing ffdshow. Oh, and if those are wmv avis, try installing the latest wmv codecs (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx).

They likely "play fine on VLC player" because it uses its own builtin codecs.

Try installing the FFDShow filter/codec to get rid of this "devilish" appearance ;>}

FFDSHOW is installed and i tried the codecs from microsoft and it didn't help the situation.

-i just am really stumped. i think it has something to do with WMP10 being slipstreamed though in my xp install. im looking into a different fresh install im sure that will fix this.

- wow i fresh installed again to an entirely different xp sp2, and still same thing! could it be possible my files have been corrupted by something, man i wish i could find a WMP11 to fix this problem. cause WMP has the most accurate colors of all the players also it has a simple fuction i like when viewing files other players like the Core Player have good things but the functionality of it is just weird.

it still doesn't play in WMP10 correctly, but anyway i uninstalled the FFDSHOW version i was using and am running now version ffdshow-20060203-icc-sse and it fixed folder crashes i was eventually getting and now I am really liking TCMP (http://www.tucows.com/preview/299014) a lot and plays everything i can throw at it so well just getting used to all its glory. and i even fixed an mkv aspec ratio problem with the tags wonderful. vote no for WMP! yes for TCMP!

Seeing how WMP never actually does any of the decoding or rendering - it's all done by DirectShow and WMFSDK, I suspect there's a bigger problem here. I suspect either the codec (ffdshow) or video driver are at fault. Can you verify that ffdshow isn't doing any funny color conversion or inserting itself when it's not needed? Do you have the latest video driver?

Looks like the yv12/rgb color conversion bug, but it should be fixed in the recent drivers.

i was testing my setup on Administrator the entire time. switching to a user fixed the problem. i usually don't even run on Admin but it was a new install and why playing video would matter im not sure but it did.

This is quite shocking!!!
And if you switch back to Administrator, the BUG apear again?

It's possible that one of the filters in your playback chain is using the HKCU (Current User) section of the registry to write settings. That would make the setting active only for one user but not the entire system.

that wierd color is an overlay problem. I got that long ago with 2 video playing.

If I am using the Primary Admin account, the one that first loads after you fresh install, i get this funked up playback, any and all other accounts made after this work fine. also the fps F.E.A.R. had problems with the game character audio on the primary admin account, until i switched to another user.

By Administrator I mean Primary Admin account, the one that first loads after you fresh install
Can you verify that?
Thanks doucrix!!!

I have that same problem on my old (~300MHz) laptop. The fix is to force it to use another color space with ffdshow. If I remember correctly, YV12 looks funky, so disabling it in ffdshow forces YUY2 output, which looks fine.
