PEOPLE - Throw away v1.2a

I read somewhere that I should use 12a because blah, blah...
HORSECOOKIES!!
Many (most?) of the problems people are having is BECAUSE they're using v1.2a. A long list of bugs have been quashed since then. This is an early beta - it's fifteen months old and fully a dozen versions ago. Better to have unusable output than to have to reset a counter every month? I think not. If you simply download & install the new versions when they come out, 15/12=not too many counter resets. Live with it.
It's a feature-rich program (without a help file) which gives new users enough difficulty without adding clutter to this forum concerning problems that no longer exist.
I strongly suspect that this defective logic is the reason that Hori-San has recently insisted that nobody else distribute the program any longer. What programmer wants to be beat to death over bugs that were fixed long ago?
Having problems with that crappy old version? Don't look here, go read the
revision history (http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_history.html).
Then go download the latest version (http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_download.html).
Then you can learn the details of this truly fine program.
End of rant

Been a while since I used TMPGEnc but the REAL problem wasn't featurs but the fact that the QUALITY of the encoding with each succeeding release got worse. Now I haven't tried the 2.x versions yet but everything in the 1.2x line this was true. There have been a couple of good reviews/tests done at various mpeg encoder review sites (I don't have any URL's handy) and that seemed to be the concensus.
But...this is the reason you're seeing 1.2a recommended.
Have a good one,

Wow, perpetuation of myth by a board moderator. What class. Maybe it's the nym. :)
If you'll re-read my original post, you'll clearly see that I'm not ASKING someone to explain to poor lowly stupid little me why this is said. There are several versions of this specious logic, and I've heard them all. Not one still applies. Thus the blah, blah...
I'm TELLING people that in the nasty now, it's UTTER BS and causing the users of this board untold problems.
Read thru the postings on this particular board. Oh, but you don't know the answers because you don't use the thing. Then perhaps you shouldn't come in here and attempt to undermine what I was trying to accomplish. But I guess you read somewhere that...
Now I never stated that you should'nt step back a version if a new bug bites you, but I intentionally said 'newest version' so that it would never stick in someone's mind that I had recommended to use only 'certain version'. And newer bugs have certainly been introduced (and fixed) on the way to the current version. Even if an especially nasty bug turns up in the current version, don't you think it would be STUPID to fall back a DOZEN versions?
I also take no responsibility for someone downloading the new version and being upset because the PAL DVD template is hosed (it is). But when it's brought up, at least it will be a problem from this century.
Sheesh...

This is just my take on the issue - and for the record, I think that Integrator's attitude is rather childish. Coming across like an ass in the forum is not the way to make people receptive to your ideas.
The most common reason people are still using the older version is that the older versions didn't have MPG-2 encoders that expired after a 30 day limit - that's why the author wanted all the old versions gone. Under the terms of his agreement with the MPG-2 folks (who were apparently considering legal action against his unlicensed encoder), he only distributes the time-restricted version now.
Some people don't want to "risk" the newer versions that have the limit, which is kind of a moot point, as people know how to reset the time limit, and the author generally releases a new version every month anyway.
But the encoding quality on the 2.0 versions IS apparently superior to the old ones, according to some of the review sites. I have had no problems with it. CCE still has the edge on speed and quality for normal 29.97 material, but TMPG has the edge for handling 24 frame and material that needs lots of processing.

@Integrator:
Coming across as an abusive, aggressive know-it-all will not further your cause. Also, picking a fight in a forum is in violation of the forum rules.
Time for a chill pill.
BTW - I stand by my statement about the 1.2x versions. I did use all of them and 1.2a was much better quality than versions "b-g". Like I said, I haven't used 2.x so I can't state whether or not that trend has been reversed. My encodes in CCE are much faster and of comparable quality if not better than TMPGEnc.
If you want to "accomplish" something, write an FAQ or tutorial and send it to Doom9 for publication. If not, then the crusade is probably more a rant.
Have a good one,
