View Full Version : My DVD drive is Possessed!

I just recently installed a 250gb SATA drive to replace my standard PATA. While I was at it I reinstalled WindowsXPpro. I have a LiteOn DVDRW SOHW-1633S combo drive as master on the primary and a LiteOn DVDROM as Master on the secondary both are fairly new, the ROM drive is the oldest at no more than 8 mos old.

Ever since I installed the drive or REinstalled Windows (cant tell cause I did it near the same time without having a need to use the burner in between) I've been having issues.

For example, if I insert a blank cd or DVD into the DVD-R drive and close the tray, it'll open right back up and repeat this open-close-open-close fit till a program grabs a hold of it. The other thing is, I can no longer burn a DVD "on the fly" using Nero Recode (or anything for that matter).

Here's a typical scenario; fire up Recode, insert a DVD movie in the ROM drive, insert Blank in the DVD-R drive. The tray on the DVD-R drive opens and closes multiple times till finally Nero prompts me to "insert blank DVD into drive". Once the warning message finally realizes there IS a DVD in the drive Nero continues like normal. I choose "copy on the fly" and the initialization process begins. Then I get a Error saying something to the affect of, "cannot read from % file". Okay I can live with the fact that maybe the ROM drive is getting flakey, so I burn the DVD to hard drive (from the DVD-R drive) then burn to disk from there. Still, when I insert the blank, the open-close-open-close thing happens. Even after a sucessful burn and Nero ejects on its own, it's followed up by the open-close-open.

Then I gotta time the tray when I snatch the disc out before it pinches the disk AND my finger!

Any ideas? I've done the obvious, like re-check my jumpers. Both drives don't seem to have a problem "reading" from a disc either.

Had a LiteON CDROM many moons ago that exhibited the same problem. I had (?) changed something or reinstalled windows (98 back then) and the drive became unusable. It would just open up and close again during normal use, resulting in scratched CDs (because it didn wait till they stopped spinning). Sometimes the CDs would literally fly out of the drive.

Before eventually buying a new drive I sealed it off with tape everytime I had to use, though I could see that it was trying to break out :scared:

:stupid: I don't think they like you borrowing their images, Sirber ;)

About the original problem: Does it only do the open-close thingy with blank discs or all discs?
The other thing is you said you upgraded from a pata HDD to sata. I'm guessing one of the dvd drives used to be set as slave, have you tried switching it back?

Typically it only happens with blanks, but just now when I tried to confirm that answer by dropping in a blank, it acted quite normal. So I fired up Nero Recode and it started tweeking. I also fired up DVDShrink and it tweeked. So for some reason its responding to applications but not necissarily specific ones

Also, back to the original post, why would I all of a sudden loose my ability to burn on the fly!?!

What if you plug alone your burner?
