yes i know its better to use a desktop but plz answer me, whats better for encoding with laptop? intel pentium 4 with HyperThreading technology OR intel core/centrino DUO?

i was told by someone that P4 with HyperThreading is more designed for near desktop performance and that the intel DUO is designed more for mobility and lower power consumption...which was fine until a couple people told me the exact opposite lol...everyone contradicts each other, so help me out here 'cuz i dont trust them hehe :)

edit: i plan to buy a laptop as a desktop replacement, so the performance is all that matters...i will mostly use it plugged into an outlet rather then with the battery, so power consumption is of no concern to me

An AMD :) Especially now that Rock (notebook manufacturer) managed to shoehorn a X2 4800+ in one of its desktop replacements - i think it weighs close to 6kg.

Back to the topic, even though you will be plugged in to the wall, the perfomance offered by the Core Duo is pretty scary - I was reading PCW, a UK computer magazine, and they were reviewing the Acer Travelmate 8204WLMi. The spec is a 2GHz Duo with 2GB Ram. In their tests, the notebook got a higher mark in their benchmarks then a desktop with a FX-57 with 1GB Ram and two 7800GTX's. This example shows how fast it could be (I know Ram sorta plays a part). And if your wondering, the HD in the notebook was a lot slower, 5400rpm against a striped RAID config. in the desktop.

This person was an idiot. Any benchmark site will tell you that higher speed Core Duos are either nearly as powerful as Pentium Ds or more powerful, depending on the App, and P4 is simply dusted by both, only P4 EE can nearly keep up.

If you ever plan to use it as an actual mobile device, either get core duo or the top turion (if you can wait a couple months you can get turion X2). Only get A64 X2 or any desktop chip if you'll never leave with it (in which case what's the point of a laptop? desktops are quieter with much cheaper storage and parts), because the heat and noise will get to you. Core Duos and top Turions are both in the 30W range, compared to P4s and X2s in the 90-100W.

Since price seems no object to you, a T2600 core duo with 2-3gb of ram will be the most powerful mobile computer you can buy now. My T2300 is awesome. I eagerly await the Turion X2 benchmarks though.
