I use Maxell DVD+R to record my movies using Nero and have no problems playing it on my Magnavox DVD player but yet I can take the same DVD and play it on my friend(s) Apex or Colby DVD players and it will read No Disc. Why is that?

Hi!

Because unfortunately, there is no ABSOLUTE STANDARD for burners, players, or media.

To determine the capabilities/limitations of your DVD burner, as well as media compatibility, go to:

www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters

(If necessary, open the Device Manager in the Control Panel to determine the make and model number)

To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model of standalone DVD player, as well as media compatibility, go to:

if you're lucky, you can bit-set a +R to a -ROM booktype. nothing changes on the disc itself, but if a player reads the booktype part and sees "DVD+R" it might pre-date the standard and spit it out, even if it's quite capable of reading the disc (+R is closer to DVD-ROM than -R is).

if you've got a pioneer/asus drive (or some others, i don't know), you can hack it to set booktype to DVD-ROM for all +R discs, and this will give you a tad more compatibility. not as much as a factory pressed disc, but as close as you'll get to it (and the way replicators are going these days, a burn could even play more reliably than a glass-mastered disc...).
