The Old Timer

I usually use DVDShrink to select part or all of a DVD & save that to my hard drive. If there are subtitle available I ALWAYS select them & whenever I have used DVDShrink to burn the file onto a disk they are always available. I have seen reference to subtitles in AGK & have already encoded maybe a dozen films using either the DIVX or XVID codec. I had forgotten about subtitles until I started to play a DVD I had encoded a couple of weeks back & there whey were on a none DIVX certified player. I has getting the titles to display OK & I could turn them on & off in my player.
What I'm struggling to understand is why I didn't also get titles on the other videos that I had encoded. I decided to do a test I selected a 2 minutes portion of a DVD using shrink & once again asked for subtitles to be captured. I then dropped the VOB file into the 'Convert' feature that is supposed to support subtitles. It told me that the file had subtitles & I ticked the box to encode. When I play the file back no subtitles are to be seen. ( I had to play back the DIVX movie file using Windows Media Player since the DIVX player seldom works even it's just finished encoding the video.) I should also mention that I once got 'Convert' to create subtitles but they were totally useless since they were about of place by about 1 minute when the file played.
I then open the exact same file in AGK . It detects my soundtrack but not my subtitles.
I would love to get subtitles working all of the time even if I had to have them burned in although I prefer to be able to turn them on & off.
Any help that you might have in unraveling this puzzle would be much appreciated.
A final thought I would have thought that taking chapter points from files created in programs like DVDShrink should be easier to include in a MPEG4 file but apparently not.
