Okay everyone, we all know that Verbatim works, but I'd like to try to compile a list of users'
experiences with all DVD-9 media....Please post in a format similiar to this and we can
hopefully make a list like "The Ultimate DVD Recordable Combatibility List" (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=22974)
Thanks

To avoid both confusion and picayune postings, I'd suggest you replace the words "dual layer" with "D/L" _ as "dual layer" is the terminology used exclusively by one of the "camps" (DVD+R or DVD-R, I really don't remember which one), while "double layer" is the terminology used exclusively by the "other camp" - BOTH to describe burnable media with two layers...

Yeah, I thought about it, but I figured I could get away with it... I just like saying "dual layer" as opposed to "double layer"
I'll change it now.

Blimey, you missed the most important bit of info.... the dye type used!
Also, the firmware version on your Sony drive.
Regardless of your personal findings, the general rule is to stick with Verbatim DL media. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

"The ultimate DVD recordable compatibility list"
What's wrong with this:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia ?
btw
DVD+R DL -> DoubleLayer

DVD-R DL -> DualLayer
http://www.edigitech.de/shop/images/fotoartikel/87794.jpg
I used to advocate DVD-R/-RW/-RAM but when it comes to DVDR9 I'm not so sure (have to test some DVD-R DLs, which might become cheaper as RiTEK also produces them now).
Maybe someone with a good insight in these things like LIGHTNING UK! (http://www.imgburn.com/) could do a small DVD-R DL <-> DVD-R DL comparison (as a chart?) for us?
e.g.
Has DVD-R9 a larger capacity than DVD+R9?
What write strategies / recording modes are used and what are the benefits / downsides of those?
What difference is there when it comes to positioning the layer break?
etc.

the general rule is to stick with Verbatim DL media This is certainly the current state of affairs - and I've posted this same belief myself, many times (and "uliudo" acknowledges this in his/her initial post to this thread) - but, as we all know, "things change".
It wasn't all that long ago that everyone attested to the great quality of Ritek and Ridata DVD5 media - and now, as you well know, you'd be hardpressed to find anyone satisfied with DVD5 media manufactured by Ritek.
A thread like this, with the addition of Manufacturer Identification Code to the postings, can only be beneficial ;>}

Prompt 1
regardless of your personal findings, the general rule is to stick with Verbatim DL media
While I do realize that Verbatim is the best media at this point, I started this thread under the impression that I can not be the only person out there who has tried other media. As setarip_old stated, 'things change,' and I am interested in seeing whether any change has occurred and being notified when it does.
I wanted to make a central area in which people could post their experiences with other media so that we might have a current listing that may show possible upcomers, rejects, or at the very least,
a location that would be available to post on should trends begin to present themselves.
Prompt 2
I have updated the information form to include burner firmware version and media identification code per setarip_old and LIGHTNING UK!'s suggestions.
Prompt 3
In response to planet1
What's wrong with this:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia ?
Two things:
1. If you actually look at VideoHelp.com's (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?dvdmediasearch=&dvdmediadvdridsearch=&type=6&size=8.5&dvdburnspeed=All&order=Compatibility&hits=200&search=Search+or+List+Media) listings for DL media, there is not a wealth of information yet.
2. The purpose of this post was to provide an area that would benefit the users of Doom9's forum. If every post was responded to with a link to another site this would be a search engine, not a forum.
Prompt 4
A thread like this.....can only be beneficial ;>}
Thanks.
I do hope that this can be of some benefit to others...
