Has anyone determined?:

1) When it might actually be necessary to keep this 400Mb file as part of the DVD? - Eliminating it doesn't seem to affect the playback of the movie, or anything else on the DVD.

2) What, if anything, the contents of this file are? Playing the .VOB directly results in nothing but a blank/black screen.

It should play fine on a software player, but I think you will find with most standalone players your DVD will not play without it.

Off the top of my head, I remember both Dark Water and Toy Story 2 SE DVDs both had useless 400-600MB files. I removed them to fit both discs on a DVD5 without any compression and it plays back fine on 4 of my home deck DVD players. ;)

As long as the VIDEO_TS.IFO has no commands that call out a command from the VIDEO_TS.VOB then you probably can delete the file. There are a lot of DVD's that put there warnings and other clips in the VIDEO_TS.VOB and if you delete it, then your DVD will crash when the commands are executed. You are better off just blanking the file. You are really not saving that much space by removing it.

Thanks to the two of you for sharing your experiences with similar situations ;>}

As I said, playing the .VOB directly results in nothing but a blank/black screen. There are no warnings or other clips, just a LENGTHY period of blank/black screen. So, I'd still be curious to hear if somebody knows what, if anything, the contents of this file are? (It's hard to believe it's just "padding", because the filesize doesn't make the difference between a DVD-5 and a DVD-9)...

Hi!

1) Try cleaning the DVD

2) Read this thread:

Hi,

At first, please try new beta of DVDFab Decrypter to see the result:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=172980

If the problem still exists, please send us all the .IFO files on Original disc, then we will check the problem.

A recommended way is listed below:
1) Open an Explorer window, and navigate to VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD.
2) Copy all files ending with .IFO to hard disk.
3) ZIP the IFO files on hard disk to one file. Name it with a readable
filename, like Stealth_UK.zip.
4) Send the zip file to fengtao(at)dvdidle.com, you need replace (at) with @.

Best Regards,
Fengtao

Thought I'd post my findings regarding omitting the "VIDEO_TS.VOB":

1) DVDs (one +R, one -R) burned with this .VOB played perfectly on all 5 standalone players tested

2) DVDs burned without this .VOB played perfectly on 4 of the standalone players tested. Only a SONY (NS725P - Historically, my SONYs have all been extremely "picky") refused to play either media

3) DVDs burned without this .VOB, BUT with .IFOs modified by VOBBlanker, played perfectly on all 5 standalone players.

I continue to marvel (See an earler thread I started regarding the old, original version "Lady and the Tramp" DVD and false camera angles) at the inconsistency among the different brands of standalone players, as to what commands are processed ;>}

Thanks Setarip_old...
It worked.
Also ripped it as follows.
Disabled my internet connection.
Opened it with power DVD paused it.
Then ripped with DVD Fab Express.
Then Shrink 3.2 with Nero.
When trying to play it with windows media player
kept having my Virus program disabling for some reason.
Hence the disabling my internet connection.
Wierd!!
