Hello,

I was searching desperately for the avc level used for Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs and then i found that pdf file from the blu-ray association : (see page 18)
http://blu-raydisc.com/assets/downloadablefile/bdj_gem_application_definition_050307-12959.pdf

I don't know if i understood correcty but apparently we must use these profiles/levels:
-main profile --> level 3.0 to 4.1
-high profile --> level 4.0 to 4.1

what does this mean ? aren't levels 1/2/3 included in level 4 ? :confused:

There are also some other issues about the container, apparently it should be "mpeg2 transport stream" (.ts ?) but i don't know enough about that.

So mp4 won't work at all ?

Hello,

-high profile --> level 4.0 to 4.1

what does this mean ? aren't levels 1/2/3 included in level 4 ?Nope; remember that profiles also include max bitrate, framerate and resolution constraints. AVC Levels 1-2.2 are all below current DVD MPEG-2 specs, so this isn't a surprise.

The following is a surprise, though:

So mp4 won't work at all ?From the PDF you provided, AAC will not be supported on BluRay.

At all.

Ouch.

So much for simply recycling one's x264 .mp4 encodes, huh?

also they don't support 25p framerate..
i fear this means many PAL area releases will be 50i not 24p :(

and yeah not supporting AAC but all those wacky dolby formats is a shame (yay for more free cookies for dolby..)

one positive tho is, that they now use 8bit palette indices for subtitle color - this will look way better than the ugly dvd subs (always assuming the author actually uses the potential..)

Also the transport stream seems to have some restriction....
Regarding AAC i was disappointed from the beginning, anyone know if is it supported by HD-DVD?

didnt find any info about that but the toshiba HD-DVD SAP seems to support AAC...

The chipset inside HD DVD player of Toshiba support AAC, but the HD DVD player play only
HD DVD Video disc or DVD Video disc :( :(

The audio codec on HD DVD Video specification:

Main Audio:

LPCM 48, 96 or 192kHz at 16, 20 or 24bits (up to 5.1ch, 2ch for 192kHz)
MLP 48, 96 or 192kHz at 16,20 or 24bits (up to 7.1ch)
DD+ 48 or 96kHz (up to 7.1ch)
DTS-HD 48 or 96kHz (up to 7.1ch)
MPEG Audio 48 or 96kHz (up to 7.1ch)

Sub Audio:

DD+ 12, 24 or 48kHz (mono or stereo)
DTS-HD 12, 24 or 48kHz (mono or stereo)
MPEG Audio 12, 24 or 48kHz (mono or stereo)

Effect Audio ("iHD"):

LPCM 12, 24 or 48kHz at 8 or 16bits (mono or stereo)

So no AAC available

MPEG-Audio, is that MPEG-1 (mpa/mp2/mp3), or MPEG-4 (aac/als), or both?

Mpeg1 layer II

MPEG 1 Layer II for stereo or mono
MPEG II Multichannel up to 7.1

No MP3, MPEG-4 (aac,..)

Mpeg I Layer II Audio & Mpeg-2 Video? No AAC or MP3 support?
Seems like we are going backwards just to sell the new standard.
Why not use H.264 and AAC on existing DVD media? Would existing dual layer DVD media support an HD movie in these formats and look just as good as a Blu-Ray movie?

Well in theory mp3 is not supported by DVD SAP's too ... but in practice now all DVD SAP's support mp3.

Standard is not always reality : IMO in practice all HD-DVD / BR SAP's will support MPEG4 ASP, MPEG4 AVC, MPEG4 AAC or MPEG4 MP4.

The fact is that they are again supporting that stupid proprietary codec.... AAC RULEZ !
Yes, they chipset can even support all the MPEg-4 specs, but the new generation DVD are just like the old one.... Dolby and DTS garbage.... I'm wondering.... at least this time MPEG 1 Layer 2 is officialy supported in the NTSC countries too XDDD
