I am testing to encode MPEG4 ASP/AVC by using mencoder and mp4creator only. It can be played by kmplayer/mpc/quicktime etc successfully.

Now I want ipod video user to help me to test whether it can be played by ipod video.

MP4(XVID+LC-AAC) for iPod Video

MP4 AVC(H264+LC-AAC) for iPod Video

Thanks a lot.

For the XviD file: iTunes could play it fine, transferred to iPod, but the iPod could not play it back correctly. It played just like my XviD encodes when I used B-frames, which I've come to discover won't work. It has flashes of extreme brightness, with no discernable shapes, whenever it encounters a B-frame (which obviously is quite often!).

For the x264 file: iTunes could play it fine, but it refused to transfer it to the iPod. It just gave a generic warning that it was not playable on the iPod.

To NWDaniels91:
I have re-encoded the Xvid MP4 with encoding option "max_bframes=0". Hope that you could help me to test it again, if you have time. Thx a lot.

Here is the mencoder GUI WinMEnc wrote by me to generate mp4 by using only mencoder/mp4creator. Hope that it can help others to study how to create mp4 for any portable device, such as ipod, psp, etc.

You can download the main program below:
http://www3.uploadready.com/v/6519491/winmenc.0.5x.mp4.zip.html

Plus mplayer/mencoder binaries, and other codecs package:
http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php
http://www2.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/codecs.html

To create ipod video's MP4(XVID + LC-AAC), I have entered the following extra parameters in the screenshot. After encode AVI, it will call external batch "mp4xvid_fps29.97.bat" to reformat to mp4 container. Please edit the batch file if the output fps is not 29.97 for the program uncompleted yet.

PS. hope that someone can help me to test xvid mp4 without b-frame for ipod video in the previous post, and let me know the result.

I found interesting behavour. B-frame determines the profile level of MPEG4. I got the following result from mp4info.

DIVX (default without B-frame): Simple@L1
XVID (default max b-frame=2): Adv Simple@L5
XVID (without B-frame): Simple@L3

Does it determine whether ipod video can play the MP4 based-on the profile level?

Finally I can create an AVC MP4 with profile baseline@1.3 (up to ipod video standard). Additional x264encopts options have to be inserted, i.e. "level_idc=13:nocabac", otherwise it will generate the profile main@5.1, which may cause itune refusing to transfer to ipod.

Here is the MP4 I created, hope that someone could help me to do test, since I don't have any ipod.

Would you mind posting the command lines you are using with these two tools? I am also attempting to output compliant MPEG4 AVC which is compatible with quicktime and ipod. Thanks.

I have updated my program with ipod profile below:
http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=54945

Plus mplayer/mencoder binaries, and other codecs package:
http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php
http://www2.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/codecs.html

You have to update your mencoder from the above source such that it can correctly set LC-AAC audio encoding (object=1), other mencoder binaries may produce "main AAC" instead.

You can simply load "ipod" profile, and examine the encode batch file to learn it.

Moreover, I have tried to produce PSP-compatible MP4, and want some PSP users to help me to test it. Please also report your PSP firmware version. Thx a lot.

For both ver1 (M4V02004)and ver2 (M4V02005), the PSP shows the title as "mika4.xvid" and has the length as 30 seconds, but it won't play the file. It says "Incompatible Data."

Thanks for NWDaniels91.
I have another two MP4 for PSP that has been reported positively by others, and I want to double-confirm it. Would you help me to test again, such that I can finalize these profile. Thx

My PSP's firmware is 1.5, so I cannot test the AVC file, sorry.

For the new XviD file, the PSP now correctly shows the thumbnail image, but when I try to play it, it just goes to a black screen. I can bring up the little video playing UI controls, but I can't actually play or navigate through the file in any way. I can't even quit the video player; I have to take out my PSP's battery to reset it (went through this process twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke).

But if others got this to work, maybe there's just something wrong with my PSP.

Thanks for your try. I have posted below two MP4 and it is reported by PSP 2.6 user that it can play. But I'm afraid it cannot be played by other PSP version. I'm not sure that the problem is due to encoding/profile setting, or the version of atomchanger? No idea to resolve it.

Use search man!

Sharktooth created profiles for this exact reason in MeGUI.

Here they are.
