I want to take a home movie and convert it to MPEG2 for a friend. He doesn't want MPEG4 for some reason. I've looked thru the site and didn't see a tool for this. will someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Hi!
If it's already in true DVD format, and there's only one .VOB in the "VTS_01_x' category, just change the extension from ".VOB" to".MPG" (.VOB is an extended version of MPEG-2). If the DVD contains two or more .VOBs in the "VTS_01_x' category (e.g. "VTS_01_1.VOB" and "VTS_01_2.VOB"), use either DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper (set to rip as ONE .VOB) to copy as a single .VOB to your hard drive - and then change the extension from ".VOB" to".MPG".

Your post is a little confusing. Your title says "DVD to MPEG2 conversion" but the body refers to a "home movie".
DVDs are already encoded as MPEG2.
Are you wanting to rip a DVD to an MPG program stream? If so, one approach is to demux the audio and video streams using DGIndex, and then remux them into a program stream using, for example, Imago Muxer.

setarip_old-
Thanks. I'll give that a try.

It's a home movie that was put on DVD a while back and he wants to re-edit it. I think I can work thru this now that I know how to change the VOBs to MPGs.

The utility which you need actually exists. It is called
VOB2MPG :)
http://software.badgerit.com/Releases/VOB2MPGv2_2.zip
If you load a dvd into it it will scan the dvd and present you with all th vob sets on the disk. The best part of this is that it converts the vob structure files to comliant mpeg 2 files that can be used by most video editors or just used as mpeg archives. (Instead of having 5 or 6 vobs with aditional headers you have 1 single Mpeg2 file...

hmmm... I don't know vob2mpg but if it is going to use ffmepg it means it will re-encode...
Take the avice of setarip... it will be faster and better quality.
changing the extension from VOB to MPG works... just make sure you don't have more than one audio track :-) - I don't think so, since it's a home video.

well... as I said, i don't know that application... just find odd an error regarding FFMPEG... it is an encoder, right?
sorry if I'm wrong.
