Does anyone have a way to do this in real time?
Currently I use virtualdub and compress the audio after.
I wold like to do it all in realtime.
My machine:
Win 2K
DX 8.1
Win TV go
SB live!
If anyone has a working jpeg of a graph doing this I'd appreciate it and I just cannot get it to work for me.
Thanks

It doesn't work at all, or it doesn't work well?
When I tried it VD would compress into MP3, but the audio offset would start to go crazy and the resulting clip has a bunch of "blip-blip-blip-blip..." in the audio.

try using FReeVCR
it lets you do it in realtime.

I dont have the option to compress the audio.
FreeVCR does no let me do this either. I can select PCM (and variations of it) but no list of codecs is available. The same is the case for virtualdub.
At the moment I am capturing in divx and PCM then compressing the audio afterwards.
Still can't do it in realtime.
How did you get virtualdub to do this??

hmmm, I only learned of FreeVCR less than aweek ago when I asked the same question about capture compress vidoe & audio in real time.
try using the latest version from the site.
I got Windows Media Encoder 7.1, DivX4 & DivX:-) and RAdium MP3 codec installed.
I was able to select audio compression in real time. try installing those it may give you the options to comress the audio

i didnt see the selection box next to the pcm selection!
So now i can select mp3 in virtualdub and freevcr, but i only have the lame codec available there and its not working. I get 'can't open graph error'
Normally in VDub I have 3 codecs available, radium, lame and the one that comes with MP7.1. In this box I can only select LAME and it wont work. LAME works fine in post processing however.
Any ideas?

1) Capturing with MP3 is not a good idea. It can lead to loss of synchronization and other troubles.
2) Most people use the (illegal) Radium MP3 codec. It should show if your audio settings are correct and you have audio copmression enabled. Perhaps you overwrote it with the codec that comes with WMP.

why not using ms mpeg4 video codec together with audio ms audio compression V2 or V8? Nice quality, free, good compression, and possibility for watching the movie via the net without the need to download the whole thing in advantage... I could name even more reasons such as no installing of trd party codecs.
I really dont understand all the discussion about divx... except its good for doing some competition which offcourse drives the development of even better codec's
