So, yeah... it seems that most of the major studios are against the feature that allows to downsample non-secure HD playback outputs. Their rationale is that customers with current tech won't appreciate having no perceptible image quality gain with the expensive move to HD. Who'd have thunk it?

Both high-def disc formats debate tech issues as HD DVD faces new delays?

Wow... they won't downsample it...
maybe they're just thinking of skipping 1 every 2 frames, so you watch the movie at half the frame rate, if you don't have a net-connected, validated, creditcard approved, player.
(Ok, I'm being sarcastic, but I get really mad when talking about this stuff... sorry. :)

It's all very bizarre, especially for us people living in PAL lands.... As video down-scaled to 540 pixels would offer less definition than the current 576 PAL DVD standard.
Unlike you guys living in NTSC lands, who would see a 60 pixel improvement ;)

Indeed.
That's why until we get up to 1080p (which is supposed to be used in all HD-DVDs and Blu-ray movies) , we shouldn't bother much with all these "intermediate" formats.
(But then we'll start complaining about 1080p movies severely "pan&scanned". :)
Watched a couple of documentaries recently about it (in a movie festival) - about movie rights, and the attrocities commited to movies by the "companies" who have the rights to do as they please. It was hillarious! Pan&scan examples were over the top! And in some movies, they even add new footage without the directors consent. ahaha
(something that's possible in the US, not in Europe)

Eh, 720p is enough for me at the moment. Given the scarcity and expense of 1080p equipment, my 720p Z2 projector's good enough for me...for now.

Same here, don't get me wrong.
(In fact I even prefer 720p to the 1080i we now have)
But, when talking about future HD media, I agree on having the source format always on 1920x1080p and then downscaling it to whatever display you have - so that when we eventually get a 1080p display, we'll be able to make use if it instead of having to buy the same movies on 1080p "editions".
For now, I'm happy for 720p on my 50" set. (...and dreaming of on affordable 1080p proj to a 100" screen... :)
