View Full Version : XVid codec gives different fcctype after system crash

I have been converting personal movies to XVid for over a year now using DivX FCC for good compatibility.

A while back I had some computer problems and I needed to reinstall the OS.
My old XVid installer was corrupted so I downloaded the newest version. Nic's build again like before (sorry Koepi).
After applying the exact same settings as I did in the past and capturing some new material I noticed a difference in output.
When I use VLC to play the file I have no problems, but WMP just gives a black screen (or whatever image is in DivX decoder memory) instead of film.

I opend up my hex editor to find out what was wrong.
With my old files I get; fcctype: XVID, biCompression: DIVX
With my new files I get; fcctype DIVX, biCompression: DIVX

I believe I must have forgotten some setting I applied in the past but I can't find anything on the forum on in the guides.

At the moment I am thinking of just using XVid as fcc. At least I know how to get the encoder to create files the decoder can use.

Should I try to get the same settings as before or should I just start using XVid fcc. And in case of old settings how do I set these?

Can you guys please help out :thanks:

you can use this tool to change the 4cc of avi files

Ofcourse I can.
I can also use a HEX editor for that.

Since no one knows what to do about my problem I am going to use XVid as fourCC in the future.
I am tired of using DivX settings and getting problems with Microsoft software all the time. It is far easyer to explain to my friends how to install XVid for the rare occasion I want to show a personal video at a friend. Alhtough some of my friends only seem able to install virusses o.O... I should write a guide for installing software for noobs one day.

Not sure ATM which was the window in the older configs ...

In an _actual_ build, we have

In that older build of Nic, search the right sub-window yourself.

Thanks for telling me where it is, but finding it is no problem. I already told I was gonna use it.
And as I told I downloaded the _actual_ build.

My problem was WMP gave a black screen after installing new codec with DivX fourCC, while the avis worked with all other programs. All I found was a difference in 'XVID' 'DIVX' using a hex editor, but changing them didn't make any difference.

Just leave it, I got some great results with new settings. Don't want to spend anymore time in this strange bug.
