gday

i have a choice between the following CPUs

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (939)

Intel Socket 775 Pentium D 820 2.8GHZ 800MHZ FSB Dual Core CPU

Intel Socket 775 Pentium 4 640 3.2G/800/2M Prescott HT EIST EM64T XD C

Which of those would be fastest for xvid encoding?

also i have heard of a dualcore optimised xvid codec althou at this point in time its kinda dodgy.

Realistically is it expected to get "alot better" in the future?

No chance of an X2? They overclock madly. And all multithreading will get better as multicore trickles into the masses.

X2 3800+ is most likely the best performance/cost CPU you can buy now, for all kinds of things. Especially for XviD. If you can go higher, then 4400+ and FX-60. If you must go lower.... no idea really.

i feel the P4 would be a better choice here.. not only it will be for fast encoding of movies but also for other tasks as well like gaming

gt, Pentium D beats P4s on almost every benchmark, X2s smoke both for only a little more, and both Pentiums are being turned into Celerons as soon as desktop Core Duos show up this fall. Why invest in outdated technology?

:stupid:
P4 is over (and the athlon 64 3700+ smokes the p4 too...)

However if you have no other choices go with the pentium d 820.

P4 is particularly bad at games, in fact very very bad. As for encoding, it's kinda good in WMV, only a bit worse (per dollar) in DIVX, but clearly worse in XviD.
That was per dollar, and P4s are cheaper. FX-60 is the fastest CPU on the planet currently.

This is 5 months old but shows the pattern which didn't change since then: http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/21/the_mother_of_all_cpu_charts_2005/page32.html

I say Pentium D 820 if you set XviD's multithread optimizations it has to be faster.

If I had to choose soley between the CPUs on your list, I too would go with the 820. However, if I could pick whatever I liked in a similar price range, I would go with either an AMD X2 3800 or for $50 more (US dollars) the 4200.

AMD dual core has been shown to be vastly superior to anything else currently on the market.

also you will benefit from AMD superior dual core architecture for other tasks too.
infact AMD's x2 tech is far better than intel's one...

Hey.....I'm not stupid....I'm "Cognitively Eccentric". Geez, some people are so politically incorrect.

if you go X2 amd have a look for a opteron 165 as it has 1mg cache per core unlike the 3800+ X2 512kb. you loose 200mhz but i have one and am sitting at 4800+ X2 speeds right now with no issues with a simple overclock.

you get a nice stock cooler with this cpu too, a heatpipe version.

also this 165 is cheaper than the 3800+ X2 by a few bucks.

Opteron 165 is faster than 3800 mainly for games. In video encoding, more cache won't help as much as more 400MHz (2x 200MHz), so it is almost as slow as PentiumD 820. See: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/opteron-165_5.html

I think X2 3800 worth the price, but if you can't afford it, then go with PentiumD 820. If you can wait more, the Intel Conroes and AM2 are coming. Of course, aways something is coming...

yes you are correct if they are running stock. i did say in my post that it was worth looking at if a small OC is something to think about. i have mine at 2400mhz so basically a 4800+ and its 100% stable.

if you are going with a pure stock system then yes i totally agreed the 3800+ is the way to go.

Thats real good to hear since I just purchased one :D

If you can wait some more months, I would say, go for a Conroe: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2725&p=10

Take a lower clocked one, overclock it to 3 GHz or more and then enjoy :)

If you can wait more, the Intel Conroes and AM2 are coming. Of course, aways something is coming...the AM2 socket and it's DDR2 interface won't result in any groundbreaking speed differences. in fact more like none.
so in terms of speed it's not worth the wait.

The real question is not which is faster for XviD encoding, but which will be faster after SMP optimization is fulfilling its promise.
I'd bank on the dual-core Intel crap being faster. If you overclock then perhaps the 3700+ is better. If you can wait, get a dual-core AM2, the DDR2 requires a lot less power and the CPU itself will be more efficient. AMD is really cracking down on power usage & M2 will 0wn.
right now, i'd go out & buy an X2.

Benchmarks shows that AMDs dual core processors outperforms Intel's dual core processors in many areas, including encoding (although not by much), and AMD draws less power.

im looknig in to a new dual system, for me opterons 165X2 are on the table :D , never had a pentium system, and if i can help it i never will :) but that new core is tempting me >< ...oh wait my latop has a p4 ... but thats different.

at the end of the day i would go dual :) it jsut feels so right and 2x dual core opterons ! well seeing 4 processor graphs in task manager will be money well spent :P

lol
