I wonder why Sony is abandoning ARccOS? 3 posibilities come to mind.

1. It is easily defeated so why inccur the additional expense in production costs.

2. They are switching to Rip Guard.

3. They are going to stop releasing movies in the current DVD format and will only release them in the new high definition format(s).

Or 4) We'll soon see another, different attempt at copy protection from SONY...

Probably...no.
DVD video format is limited in its specifications hardware (DVD players).
They will not support encrypted data as well than HDDVD or blu-ray hardware (DRM and others...).
I think that #3 possibility is right. We'll know it soon.

You seriously think that Sony is going to stop releasing DVD's?

*snicker*

*snort*

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

*gasp*

*giggle*

*cry*

You're deluded. Sony will keep releasing DVD's for a long time. They still release VHS, for cryin' out loud!

"Sony appears to have ceased using its own ARccOS DVD security technology in February"
Didnt say ceased producing/releasing dvd's

I was referring to photoguy's comment:

No wonder MV only has one studio on board for there RG protection, it's useless!
Personally I have always thought Sony's ARccOS was a better protection than RG. MV will half to dream up something really smart to defeat all the rippers in the second quarter if they plan on getting more studios on board.

Correct Gurm!
I understood "they are going to stop movies arCoos protected"...not DVD format!
I don't believe of course they will give it up ...:o

Who knows what Sony are getting up to these days. That once highly respected company is now a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if some executive (possibly high on cocaine) has decided that the perfect copy protection is to stop producing anything worth protecting. If you think about it, that policy was probably introduced a year or so ago ago, and it's gathering momentum.

:p

It's almost a year later now - and we all know that SONY has continued to trudge on with ARccOS copy protection.

One has to wonder what the purpose of that original article was...

Perhaps that if Sony was really going to stop using ARccOS - then they perhaps would use Ripguard instead and rising the share prices of Macrovision.

We believe this change could be positive or negative for Macrovision," the analyst said. "It could be positive if Sony has made a decision that its ARccOS technology is ineffective and is now looking for a different technology to replace ARccOS. It could be a negative sign, if Sony has decided that anti-ripping technologies, in general, are not worth the cost and effort. The whole article sounds as a commercial for Macrovision.

Great IT analyst, eh? The investor phones up and asks him for advice - "well, it could be positive or negative". D'Oh!
