ugh! problem after problem, now I have a new one. I'm getting this message...

http://img16.imagevenue.com/loc123/th_06220_burn_error.JPG (http://img16.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc123&image=06220_burn_error.JPG)

I was trying to burn the movie *Jarhead* I think it stopped at the 40% mark...

anyone know why it's doing this? I don't think it's the movie cos I've tried 2 in a row (diff movies) and I don't think it's the DVD-R's, cos these always work (Memorex 16X Sony)

could it be a hardware prob? I hope not...

There a LOT of text on the burn error, I saved it.. if anyone knows what it means, I can paste it... I have no idea

It appears to be a power calibration error - burning at a lower speed may resolve it.

You may also want to edit your Nero serial number out of the first line of your log post.

Not a very significant point but, if NERO detects a power calibration error it generates a specific line in the log that states, "Power Calibration Error" (There is none in the log presented in this thread)...

spanx for info, guys.
im gonna try writing at a lower speed right and report back... but last night before i gave up, I got this new text, it didn't even wanan burn, stayed at 0%

1) You have once again posted a NERO log that includes your SERIAL NUMBER. You should remove it from the post...

2) This new log does, in fact, specifically mention a "Power Calibration Error". According to the NERO/Ahead site's explanation of errors:

"9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Please try the following solutions:

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
Send the recorder in for service."

Additionally, it appears that your burner is not capable of the bitsetting that you are apparently attempting Drive: SONY DVD RW DRU-800A
Book Type request [LO]: DVD-ROM
Unknown Book Type request for driveAnd, once again, try using higher quality media and burn at a lower speed (such as 4X)...

I removed it

Well, the burning at 4X Failed!! It doesn't even go at all, stays at 0%...

I've never had any probs til now. I don't think its the movies, or DVD-R's, I've been burning movies for months & months, using the same DVD-R's (Sony, Memorex) they and DVDShrink have always worked til now... I think it's a hardware issue? I've had this for close to a year, I think.

My player is internal, I dunno how to take it out, I had it installed at Circuit City.

Is there another program you can recommend? I dunno if its DVDShrink, but I'm curious if it'll run, or run into the same error, if it does... I think it might be the burner itself.

setarip_old
9th March 2006, 03:23
I've been burning movies for months & monthsYou might want to try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US...

Actually you've deleted both logs in their entirety, rather than just removing the serial number from each...

http://shopping.msn.com/results/shp/?bCatId=4683,av=2-123001

which one is it on here? do they sell it at bestbuy, circiut city?

Hmm, I wasn't sure where the nero # was, too much txt, I can try running another burn, though

so you think this cleaner might work? just needs a cleaning, you don't think it's the burner that's going bad?

setarip_old
9th March 2006, 06:08
so you think this cleaner might work? just needs a cleaning, you don't think it's the burner that's going bad?If you run the DVD/CD cleaning disc on your burner and things begin to work properly again, you'll know that your problem was likely a dirt/grime problem. If your burner still doesn't work properly after running the DVD/CD cleaning disc on it, you'll know that your problem is likely not simply a dirt/grime problem...

SinfulCurves_RPG-7, it wasn't necessary to remove your entire log - it may have been useful to someone else with the same problem. The only point of concern I had was the serial number itself on the first line, which as it turns out is a universal code for Nero bundled with Sony drives.

setarip_old, you have once again corrected me when it wasn't warranted. I investigated a relevant portion of SinfulCurves_RPG-7's original log file, which specifically indicated a power calibration error despite the fact there was no actual line of text indicating such error.

Her logs have been deleted so I don't know what is going on with her problem exactly.

@Sinfulcurves_RPG-7
Your log should look something like the example below with the serial# removed. It is in the very first section BTW.
Also, Memorex is very iffy media. They use several manufacturers for their disks...Prodisc for one, Yuk!
You should try a free program something like 'DVD Identifier' to always know the make of your disks.
Get DVD Identifier at the link below:

Try a different media as has been suggested.

You can try 'Backup to an ISO' with Shrink, then burn using the freeware program ImgBurn. It is more forgiving of iffy media. I personally use ImgBurn to burn my backups.

Get it at the link below:

The media you're using (SONY08 - D1) appears to be DVD-R. Bitsetting is only necessary with DVD+R media.

I've always used DVD-R's to record dvd's... I don't understand

Either you're mistaken about the media you've been using or you haven't always had bitsetting enabled. It shouldn't be hard to understand - the solution has been pointed out to you numerous times.

1) Your burner may be dying (re-read what I posted regarding NERO's definitions of "power calibration error")

OR

2) If you're lucky, your burner may benefit from running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on it. Maxell makes one that sells for approximately $10US
