Replace bframes by more mixed-refs pframes?

Would it be advantageous to replace bframes (ex max 3) with more mixed-refs?

The only real difference between p-frames and b-frames is the existence of direct and interpolated modes. I'd rather replace all p-frames with (spatial-direct) b-frames instead.
