I'm wondering what the best burner is out there for the cheapest amount of money... ie. writing most diverse amount of different copy protections, speed (not as important), accuracy, and least amount of coaster making. Please include prices.

yeah i knows
it should hopefully mean the older model comes down in price too which will make copying all protections even more affordable

Thanks for the input,

I've been sick for the last few days so i haven't been able to check this. With all i heard about the plexwriters on other sites i was sure that was the only thing that could copy all protections. Are there any new protections that are coming out that i'll have to upgrade again soon or has the industry taken a vacation :) ...

oh what is this "cactus" protection.

cactus protection is used on audio cd's not really a major issue for me . i believe the new natalie imbruglia cd had it on but they have now removed it for some reason ( the cd came with mp3 tracks on it in addition to the wav files anyway , odd huh)

liteon is pretty much the way to go if you dont want to spend a lot more money on a plextor, which although it may be a little bit better i cant justify spendin the extra money on somethin which basically does the same thing

Well, I can say for a fact that my Plextor 16x, has never made a coaster, or given me any problems whatsoever, it was about $170.00, and to me, worth every penny, I wouldnt own anything but it.

plextors are good but have problems with 99min cd's the liteone can work with 99min cd's even on full speed

Plextors are rock-solid and it is not without a reason that you get 2 or 3 years warranty on them.
Liteons are great for their (unbeatable) price ... not all of them will do 99min CDs, though. The 24x will do, the 12x and 16x exist in different varieties with different 99min capabilities. Error correction is substandard (ever tried to play back a perfectly decent SVCD on a Liteon?).
I own a Liteon CD-R (and a Plextor CD-ROM:)) ...

TDK is another good brand, I have the 16x velo, BTW plextor and TDK come off the same assembly line, same drive, different front panel.
The TDK comes with nero rather than adaptec, the only difference.
And they do burn everything. I bout a lite-on 16x for my son and for the money you can't beat it. $49 after rebate.

Once again, this is all very helpful. I'll probably get it from this site -- http://www.micropro.com/item.htm?item_id=CDBTCD161040&product=CD/DVD%20Drives -- after i can get some fundage back (PS2 and a seatbelt violation ticket). If anyone has had any problems with the site i'll buy through please tell me...

BTW sommersby, you brought up that the TDK and the Plex come off the same line, is that "40x audio rip" just another case of marketing bs or does the plex do that too.

When Maximum PC did the test on them they tested out almost exactly the same, the contributed the only difference to software and whatever the computer was doing while testing as you can never get the exact same results even with the same burner.

And to answer your question, neither actually came out to 40x, but they were both by far the fastest, if I remember they came out at about an actual 32-35X.
