I am looking into buying a DVD player for Christmas, and I was just wondering what model of DVD player you would recommend? Mainly, I am looking for something that will play SVCD/VCD discs, but that still has nice quality.
Now that I bring it up, does anyone know if the PlayStation 2 plays SVCDs? That would be something great to know! (Possibly if you have a SVCD disc made, and a PS2, you could hurry and test it out for me!!)

Anyway, any feed back would be great. I want to make sure I get a good deal, butI don't want to go broke doing it. Any input on personal experience with your current standalone DVD player would also be appreciated!

Thanks guys!

PS2 doesnt play SVCD.

The Apex 1000 ($90.00 at walmart) plays SVCD GREAT and MP3 playback is also great

Their 3 disc changer the 703 is 159.99 and that works very nice too for SVCD but mp3 playback sux bad and the remote doesnt have a power button. I have the 5131 3 disc changer and it is having an issue right now with chaptering, it plays the SVCDs fine and mp3s very well though and Im sure the problem I have is not player related..it goes for $129.00 at Sams Club..but if your not in the US i guess you dont have sams club :)

I know two people who've had Apex and after I recommend them getting the Pioneer 434 they were impressed with the improved picture quality compared to the Apex. Pioneer 343 $150 amazon works great too minus the progressive scan.

My mother has had problems with the Apex 703 and my brother had problems with the pioneer 434, and now his reciever too. So be careful.
