View Full Version : MKV Subtitle problem....

Recently I moved to the MKV container format. I liked it more than OGM as seeking within video files was much faster and in general, MKV seems to be a better choice for long term storage of DVD backups.

I used the Doom9 VDubMod guide in order to convert my OGM files into MKV files. Everything seems to be okay except there is a small issue with subtitles.

Inside my mkv files there seems to be 'none label' for subtitles.

I use MPC to play mkv and I have the following subtitles options:

Navigate>Subtitle Language>English

and

Navigate>Subtitle Language>Unknown 1 (no subs)

Is there any way to rename this text stream into "Disable Subtitles" and make it the default option within the container file? It's really annoying to have subs popup straight away.

I am also interested if there are any good DVD to MKV conversion programs. I can still get the Xvid video and ogg sound with DVDtoOGM/AutoGK, but it would be nice to have a program that can build mkv files natively.

vdubmod is no longer up to date at all with mkv; you should use mkvtoolnix. All you have to do is drag your file into mmg and remux. No hassle. If you have to, click on the subtitle entries and give them a language in the dropdown.

See this forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=78) for dvd-to-whatever converters.

To disable subtitles, you should change the setting in haali's, or make sure the stream isn't checked default when you mux.

Thank you for mentioning mkvtoolnix, it is better than VDubMod for mkv. But the unknow title problem still remains. I muxed another avi into mkv and this one did not have any subtitles. I am being picky, but it would still be nice to solve this problem. Perhaps I have to configure the splitter in some way? or maybe MPC?

Another problem that really annoys me about mkv is that icon cannot the set. I tried setting my custom icon through windows explorer, but that seems to have no effect. Setting the icon through MKV shell extensions also does not work. Any clue what might be causing this (it's not spyware/viruses)?
