I have backed up both of these using AnyDVD ripping to DVD Shrink, with no problems. As a matter of fact, I believe 24 ripped using just Shrink.

There ought to be a sticky.

TV Episode DVD's are notoriously poorly mastered. The quality control is next-to-nil, which sucks considering how much they cost!

I've NEVER had a complete run of a TV series rip cleanly without having to switch drives, or fiddle.

I've had 3 different copies of Firefly have errors on disc 4.

I've had 2 different copies of Band of Brothers have errors on different discs.

I've had my Stargate SG-1 have an error.

The Muppet Show had multiple discs with errors.

Usually, switching to my wife's machine to rip works fine - her DVD drive is FAR more tolerant of errors than mine is. But sometimes nothing I do will help. :(

I've backed up Firefly twice, no problems.
Band of Brothers, no problems
Stargate Atlantis, no problems

Don't have the Muppet Show.

I use an Asus DVD-ROM to rip and a Sony to burn and haven't had any problems with any episodic disks. I keep the firmware updated, although there was a firmware update a while back for the Asus that caused errors and had to be rolled back. Thanks to this board I caught it right away. I think that hardware quality matters. I know people with Toshiba and LG optical players that have problems even playing commercial DVDs. When they switch them out, problem solved.:)

When I've had problems, it's usually with damaged source disks (I always clean them before ripping) and cheap burning media. I've stopped using anything except Tao Yudin or Verbatim. I used to use TDK a lot, but got some spindle media at Costco that was picky about what it would play on, so I stopped using it.

FWIW I have two DVD drives; usually the NEC 3540a to rip and Lite-On 5239v to burn, but on the bad ones the Lite-On has made the grade...
(except for a REALLY BAD copy of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Wild World Of Batwoman, which not even the versitile Philips deck could play- another TV show transfer... hmmm..)I also had the tin box-set of Band Of Brothers and it was also freezy-hangy on my old computer's DVD player.

I really like the Lite-On 5239; wish I'd gotten two of those in the beginning. :o
