View Full Version : Subtitles don't appear during playback on standalone dvd player

I 'Dvdshrinked' a spanish movie and burned it on a dvd-5. Although I can see the subtitles when I play it on my PC, I can not see the subtitles on both my standalone dvd players.
I used Nero 6.3 to burn it and never had problems before (or thereafter for that matter).
Can anyone suggest a cause to this problem?

Hi!

Does the original, purchased DVD exhibit the same problematic behaviour when played on your standalone players?

No it doesn't; subtitles play ok from the original. However, it does have a small problem in that it skips 1:08 to around 1:16 so I miss around 8 minutes (on both standalone players). I ripped it on the PC without problems though.

When playing the burned DVD on your standalone, have you tried pressing the "Subtitle" button on your remote control?

Fair question.
Yes, I toggled it and waited long enough to see that there were no subtitles in any setting. Also, all other dvds play fine btw. Both standalone players are different brands too.

idigvb, could you post a tiny snippet of your VOB and IFO so we can take a look? In my experience, these kinds of problems are very hard to debug, there are many things that might be wrong... I'm not sure whether your DVD is a movie-only one, but:
- Can you redo the shrink, movie only, keeping only 5-10mn of the main movie, with all subtitles?
- Check that this version does not show subtitles on your standalones
- Then zip all the files up into a zip and post it using www.yousendit.com

I'll take a look at it and check whether I see something obvious...

Thanks for the tips jeanl. I need to get back to you on this in a few days when I find some time.

By the way, I've done a movie only shrink. Maybe it's a good idea I try shrinking the whole DVD and see what happens.

Dumb Q....is your TV 16:9(or compatible)? If you preview on TV while TV showing 16:9 and dvd stand alone set to 16:9 TV do the subs show?

No, it's not 16:9.
I've attached a small part of the movie here:

idigvb,
I downloaded the snipped, and checked in PgcEdit:
The main domain attributes are 16:9 for the video. If you're using a regular 4:3 output display (i.e., if your DVD player is setup to play in 4:3, then either auto pan-scan or the auto letterbox will be selected, and therefore the subpic stream 0x21 will be used. All this is according to the info shown in PgcEdit (double click on the movie PGC, then click Domain attribute for the video attributes, and click on the subpic buttons to see which subpic stream is associated with which video display mode).

However in your snippet, I only saw a 0x20 stream (no 0x21). This may be because you only sent a tiny bit of video, or it maybe that you don't have a 0x21 stream.
Drag/drop your VTS_01_1.VOB file onto DVDSubEdit and let it scan the VOB. Then click on "Stream select" to see how many streams you have.
If you don't have a stream 0x21, then you won't get subtitles unless you select the widescreen display mode.
Maybe you accidentally removed the stream in shrink?

It's really what I thought the problem was:rolleyes:

I think you're right ukendt, but I can't be sure because I only got a tiny portion of video and stream 0x21 might be there after all.
Besides, you have to admit that's a tricky thing to understand...

The dvd has 0x21 and 0x20 indeed.

In dvdshrink there was only one subtitle option which I selected. I used the movie only option. Could this have caused the problem?

You mean, you can see the streams in DVDSubEdit?
Could you then re-sent a small snippet with at least 1 or 2 subtitles from each stream? (DVDSubEdit tells you which sector a given SPU is at, add a few hundreds for good measure)

Yes, I can see the steams in DVDSubEdit.
How do I make the snippet ensuring that the 0x21 is in there? As far as I can tell from DVDSubEdit, 0x21 is in all SPUs, therefore the small snippet I already made should have had a 0x21.

Wait... SPUS (subpic pack units) cannot be both 0x20 and 0x21. You have spus that belong to stream ox20, and others that belong to steam 0x21, and they're different (you'll see two versions of the same subtitle, one for 0x20 and one for 0x21). Simply cut your vob after the 3rd or 4th subtitle, this should ensure that you include spus from both streams since they usually come in pairs...
What happened is you cut after the first 0x20 spu, but before the first 0x21 one...
