Yet another "great" article from THG about divx. Its better than the last on they did, but still they manage to call Dvd2avi 1.82 unstable and with mp3 support.
They're also very exicted about divx 4.11 being optimized for SSE(1).

Well, at least their articles are getting more and more accurate :)

I don’t get one thing in this review.
In this page (http://www4.tomshardware.com/video/01q4/011207/divx411-08.html), he does a 720*576 test, YUV color space, with both divx 4.02 and divx 4.11, using DVD2AVI 1.76 with no audio. He gets 22 and 27.6 fps with 4.02 and 4.11 (Athlon XP 2000+).
In the next page (http://www4.tomshardware.com/video/01q4/011207/divx411-09.html), with the exact samme settings, but using this time Xmpeg 4.2a, he gets 32,5 and 33,2 fps.
How can the THG Xmpeg results be much higher than DVD2AVI 1.76?
Is Xmpeg faster than DVD2AVI??

Other thing: i thought that divx 4.11 was optimized for SSE2 and not SSE1.
Who is right??

Xmpeg is really fast and I suspect his results are accurate. However, I'd have to say I get better quality from DVD2AVI. Also, Xmpeg just isn't very stable.

for me dvd2avi is a bit faster than xmpeg (same movie + settings, Athlon 1GHZ,Divx4.11)

Did nobody watch their video?

Did you notice how they didn't bother to deinterlace it?

Now that's a breakthrough in encoding speed!

Those guys really know their stuff!

What about the Divx 4.11 being optimized for SSE1? Is this correct?
Doom9 said somewhere in this forums that it was optimized to SSE2

Pentium 3 implements SSE1, right? It runs no faster on my Pentium 3.

Short and to the point:)
Thanks

the amazing part of the article is that THG seems to belive that intel is the ones that have done the optimizations in xmpeg and divx 4.11

just amazing

1. Speed : I bet they were using a crappy iDCT algorithm in XMPEG, because its normally no way faster than DVD2AVI.

2. DivX 4.11 was optimized for SSE 2 ( P IV and future AMDs ) , but some guys also noticed a slightly better performance on SSE ( PIII, TBs ).

3. Tom's Hardware are really the xperts in DivX encoding ;) ...
