need to read asf file - microsoft media player of course asking for license etc... I know most players removed support (such as videodub) because of microsoft demands.. Are there any free players left on the net that would still read the file?

The same players that have always played .ASF files still do (VirtualDub is an editor, technically not a player - and older version 1.3 still plays .ASF files) - but don't play DRM or otherwise-protected .ASF files unless, of course, you pay for the license required for the particular file...
