i get the error different data format.... when joining with virtual dub

you can only join vids when the audio codec is the same
same bitrate channels etc
And you can only join vids with the same resolution, etc
You may also want to stop virtualdub prebuffering audio on the joined section. Im not sure on that but you should check it.

Since the settings all look right, it's probably the framerate. If the framerates are different at all, even by tiny fractions of a second that don't show up on the infobox, you won't be able to join them. One way to fix it is to open both in vdub and stream them back out, being sure to manually set the framerate of both to 25.

qpel, gmc, quantizer matrix, resolution... other than these 4, i think its OK

Joining a clip which uses inter4v with one that doesn't can look pretty weird...

Nah, chaning VOL is technically illegal but look at all these "modulated quantizer" encodes some of us still have.

And only few options change VOL (what kotrtim said, plus PAR and bframes on/off (not number) ).

Definitely not inter4v.

My mistake, I had "inter" written down which I thought meant inter4v but probably means interlaced. I joined them into a .mkv hence only one VOL header, an .avi would probably play back correctly.
