I have searched on the forums and Google, but I cannot seem to determine what the difference between 3:2 Pulldown and 2:3 Pulldown is. Most sources seem to suggest that the two are interchangeable names for the same process. However, when I import video sources into DVD Lab Pro, sometimes it will indicate that the source is 3:2 Pulldown [DF] while other times it will say 2:3 Pulldown [DF] which suggests that it considers them different.

For example, when I import the raw VOB files from the film Attack of the Clones, DVD Lab indicates that the material is 2:3 Pulldown [DF]. But if I instead import my re-edited version that includes deleted scenes and custom made transitions, DVD Lab Pro says the video is 3:2 Pulldown [DF].

Is this just a difference in the telecine pattern order? Should I try to redo the pulldown so that the edited version is also 2:3 Pulldown [DF] if I wish to avoid audio/video desync?

Regards,

John

I've seen this page in my searches before posting, but I'm not certain that I understand it correctly. I gave my interpretation of the very small paragraph in that webpage where it mentions 2:3 vs 3:2. Again, is it just a matter of whether the telecine pattern is even or odd?

Each group of 4 frames is pulled down to 5 frames by adding two extra fields. If the extra fields are added to the first and third frames of the group, then you have 3:2 pulldown:

1 1 2 3 4
1 2 3 3 4

If the extra fields are added to the second and fourth frames of the group, then you have 2:3 pulldown:

1 2 2 3 4
1 2 3 4 4

Thanks! That made things perfectly clear.
