Is there a setting in the codec to set the key frame to be inserted every 10 secs or is it the encoding applications job? Also how do i set a minimum DRF of 8?

There are no DRFs, they're called 'Quantizers' in XviD, and '8' would be way too high (with the standard matrices) for viewable quality. Please consult the XviD guides (http://www.doom9.org/xvid-guides.htm) and Crusty's FAQ (http://ronald.vslcatena.nl/docs/xvidfaq.html) to learn about the basics of this codec.

I have every set according to the doom9 xvid 1.1 tut. How about the key frames? Is there a specific setting? I can't seem to find anything relevant in the tut and by seraching around

the reason i ask is because sometimes i get:

This video seems to have too FEW Keyframes. May degrade image quality and seeking. (drf analyzer)

in some of the xvid's i encode. Everything is per the tutorial. Is there anyway that i can insert a keyframe every 10 secs?

If I get that "Maximum key frame interval" parameter right XviD will put in a key frame every 300 (def.) frames even if not necessary.

ok thanks that worked.

If I get that "Maximum key frame interval" parameter right XviD will put in a key frame every 300 (def.) frames even if not necessary.XviD is a bit smarter than that. It doesn't put in a keyframe exactly at frame 300 but lowers the keyframe-sensitivity so much that it quickly finds an eligible frame.

Don't listen to DRF's warnings about quality (it was made way back in the 5.0.x era; it will also tell you that n-vops are the devil), but it's true seeking can be impaired. If instant seeking is important and you're going rewind a lot, you might lower it to 60 or so. I do that when I have something I rewind/fastforeward a lot, but then my processor sucks.

Simply having one b-frame will halve your seeking time. Not to mention two.
