View Full Version : How do I use .sub demuxed from DVD decrypter in subrip

The reason for this may seem odd, but I have demuxed DVD's and splitted by chapter in DVD Decrypter, leaving me .m2v, .ac3 and .sub files.
I noticed that subrip supports .sub files (even in addition to ifo/vob input), but it fails to read the data. Are there anyway to open these files in subrip to OCR them to a text format?

odyssey, DVDSubEdit can open a .sup file and OCR it, but the OCR is far from 100% reliable... You can save the result as a .txt file (soon to a .srt file).

I searched the forums, which lead me to commandline tools called DVDSupTools. They should be able to convert the demuxed sub (or sup) binaries from vob-files into a text file and optionally generate bmp's, which should open fine in subrip. However, it did leave me a useless text file with info I already know, but no bmp's at all!
Btw, DVDSubEdit asks for an ifo-file in order to open a sup file.
Any other way to convert these binary sub/sup files to a useable format???

odyssey, you can say "cancel" when the IFO open panel opens, and the .sup file is still loaded (but of course, you have no CLUT)...

nothing happens??? Can you send me your .sup file (jeanldvd at free dot fr)? I'll try it here and see if something's wrong...
Do you see the slider to select the subpics? Does DVDSubEdit tell you how many were found?

I got your files... They're .sub files, not .sup. Currently, dvdsubedit can only open vob or .sup files...

But what's the difference??? I saw your documentation, sup files are demuxed from vobedit, and mine are demuxed from dvddecrypter, but it does not make sense to me, that it would be two different binary files.
Anyway, which tools are able to convert them to sup??

Well, I don't know much about .sub files, but apparently they don't have the same format (if they have the same data)... I'm not sure which tool can convert between them... Sorry... :(

I think that SUB files from DvdDecrypter are VOBSUB files.

No they are not....
AFAIK the sub files from DVD Decrypter are presently useless, i.e. no program will deal with them.
You can use vsrip to get vobsub subs (sub/idx), which can be ocred in SubRip, but getting separate files for each chapter without lots of manual interaction may be tricky. You can OCR the subs for the whole movie in one hit and then use Subtitle WorkShop (say) to split the srt on chapter boundaries, I suppose. Still an annoyance though.

Apparently (I'm reading that from the subtitlecreator doc), subtitlecreator can convert from sub to .sup... You might want to give it a shot?

There is a text-based format with the .sub extention, that is what SubtitleCreator supports :)

Is this confusing or what?! So there's a text-based .sub format used by subtitlecreator and a binary .sub format created by DVDDecrypter!!!
Fun fun fun!

.sub (text-based) is MicroDVD format.
And don't forget Vobsub's .sub/.idx ;-)

OMG what a nightmare LMAO.
Anyway, i've come to this neat solution:
Stream process the individual chapters in DVD Decrypter, demuxing all audio and video streams and unselecting them. This leaves me with nice little vobs for the chapters I need, only containing the subtitles.... And subrip reads them fine ;-)

Is this still the case two years later?
I ripped all my Korean DVDs this weekend and now I think I maye have screwed up! I thought I could save a step demuxing everything during the rip process, but now I have .SUB subtitle files that don't work anywhere!
So...either I rip them all again, or learn Korean! :p

Yes, and 2 years from now as well.

manono, do you know technically what the problem is with these subs?

Hi,
As DVD decrypter is dead, is it really necessary for softwares to be able to open subtitles demuxed using DVD decrypter? I don't think so. You can use pgcdemux for example that will extract SUP files (handled by DVDSubEdit) or VSRip to extract VobSub files (handled by SubRip).
And also the current (and future) version of SubtitleCreator can now convert binary sub (vobsub) files to sup files (and the opposite).
Cheers

Hi!You can use pgcdemux for example that will extract SUP files (handled by DVDSubEdit)No need for PGCDemux, as DVD SubEdit can directly extract the subs as .SUP...

I suppose you mean DVDSubEdit can directly work on the subtitle stream in the VOB without the need to extract the sup file.
Or does really DVDSubEdit also demux SUP files from DVDs?
Cheers

From the DVD SubEdit manual:Saving: Whether you opened a VOB file or a sup file, you can save the selected spus as a .sup file, using the “Save selected spus as .sup file” in the “File” menu.

Yes, DVDSubEdit extracts the subpics and saves them as a SUP file...
I was just curious as to what was wrong with the DVDDecrypter files...

No, I'm sorry, jeanl. It's just that I've tried unsuccessfully over the years to do something with them, and read of other people working unsuccessfully with them. My "2 years from now" remark was because of something manusse mentioned; DVD Decrypter is dead and won't be further developed so we can do something with them or, alternatively, make it so it demuxes SUP files.
No need for PGCDemux, as DVD SubEdit can directly extract the subs as .SUP...
Oh, there's a big need for PGCDemux. When demuxing I don't want to use different apps to get the different streams. PGCDemux gets me everything at once; video, audio, subs, cells list.

@manono
Hi!
My post was limited to responding to the post by "manusse" indicating that use of PGCDemux was required in order to produce .SUP files for use with SubEdit...

It might be possible to work around the sup problem in dvddecrypter, but it's probably not worth the trouble...

Same problem here. Have several hundred DVDDecrypter SUBs (before I switched over to PGCDemux) that I want to somehow convert or process. I find it hard to believe that the format used by what used to be (and widely considered to still be) the best DVD ripper isn't supported by any tools. Would really appreciate it if someone found one utility that can interpret these files.
