Ok Im using tmpgenc dvd author to make my dvd's and tmpgenc plus 2.5 to encode, i author a dvd and the guage at the bottom indicating the size of the finished disc says its at 4.7gb or (4438mb im told its actually4483mb) so it says its full so i create the dvd folder and it turns out smaller than 4.7gb i can open nero or the dvd write tool that comes with dvd author and both will say the folder is smaller than what the guage originally said also when i check the folder size by right clicking and selecting properties its smaller than when i right click the mpeg file i authored??also if i choose an m2v and ac3 file seperately as audio and video sources in dvd author i get a smaller final product than if i mux the files first?????whats the diff there???i do know that you can fit an 800mb mpeg on a 700mb cdr so im just wondering whats going on here and how much can i actually fit on a dvd, and by that i mean how big of an mpeg file can i put on disc(if im checking the size by right clicking)
Thanks

4.7GB is only a marketing term. It uses units of 1,000 instead of 1,024.

A DVD+R is 4,483 MB.
A DVD-R is 4,489 MB.

Muxing video and audio streams will make the two files combined slighty larger becuse there is some overhead. Whether you import an already muxed file or the m2v and ac3 separately depends on the dvd authoring program. For TMPGEnc you should import an already muxed file.

how big of an mpeg file can i put on discYou also have to account for menu size, if you create them in TMPGenc DVD Author.

when i check the folder size by right clicking and selecting properties its smaller than when i right click the mpeg file i authored??1) If the original "MPEG file" is actually a .VOB file, it probably contains multiple audiostreams and subtitles, while the "TMPGEnc DVD Author"-created DVD "package" will only contain one audiostream and no subtitles.

2) Are you converting the audiostream from 5.1 .AC3 to MPEG I Layer II format? This would also reduce filesize...
