With all the authoring we do and all the tools available, I found there just wasn't a good DVD bitrate calculator.

We've developed a calculator that includes something I find invaluable which is a balance between the bitrate of the feature and the special features. It also lets you choose the number of audio streams, set them as 5.1, commentary, or stereo and also set all of your dvd-rom and motion menu runtimes.

enjoy.

This is really the first beta version and is probably full of bugs but I wanted to get something out there. The next version will hopefully have user accounts which will allow multiple projects and also UI improvements.

well...let me know about any bugs or if your computer explodes from using it.

Cheers,

Ian Kirby.

that's very cool.

i use a similar (proprietary - i didn't write it, and i'm not allowed to share it, sorry :() that does something similar. you build a skeleton of what's going on the disc, and set rates accordingly. this way you can set a group called "feature", one called "extras", one for "trailers", "menus", etc. very handy.

unfortunately it doesn't take mux overhead into account, which means we have to round down our bitrates a lot :)

I really like the idea of multiple groupings and allowing various bitrate priorities. Not just the "Feature" and "Special Features".

Dare I ask which company you're with? I'm just so suprised that all these authoring tools out there still have absolutely no bitrate calcs. Even my wonderful scenarist with no UNDO!

The bitrate calc is still very beta...probably should have been an alpha but i just wanted to get something up there before it got stuck on the back burner as usual.

cheers,

ian.

I hate to complain when someone does something like this for free, but your calculator website is useless if viewed in Firefox. Perhaps for the future you might consider making it less IE-centric.

I should of stated that flash 7 or higher needs to be installed. It does break quite well without this. Firefox/IE/Safari are completely supported. There are no fancy layers or ajax being used.

We need to put a version detector on it.

Thanks Ian

we used it tonight for the title were working on - worked great.

Also, your work on "The Corporation" was fantastic! I thought it was one of the better discs I've seen in a long time. Never thought to say much about it untill i saw you on this forum.

Thanks
Eric
