View Full Version : General use (for viewing only) codec pack?

Hi all,

Been a long, long time since I spent all my free time figuring out exactly the four or five codecs I needed to install to rip and watch stuff.... and now I have a new computer, and just want to quickly install the needed codecs for viewing the most popular/typical video files on the net.

I used to scoff at the Nemo pack since I thought it came with a bunch of crap you didn't need. But now I think I saw it lets you install only what you want (and even uninstall codecs on the fly, yeah?).

Does anyone have any opinions on a good codec pack or set of general use codecs? Or should I just get a divx codec and call it a day?

TIA!!

Well, was too impatient to wait for a response, so I found this:

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Which seems pretty cool -- tells you what codec you need for a given file. Then I bit the bullet and used Nimo, even though it installed several things I probably didn't need, but everything seems OK (as long as you install version 9 cuz the ffdshow in version 8 is borked).

I'd still really like to hear what you other people are using.

CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net) is what I use for boxes that just need playback. It's very well done, and doesn't contain the usual senseless bloat associated with codec packs.

@pdontthink

Hi!

Since your concern is limited to viewing, the FFDShow filter/codec should be just about the only thing you'd need...

imho no codec pack is better, try ffdshow

I'm gonna take a look at CCCP. Does it let you pick and choose? Does it let you remove only some codecs?

Using ffdshow only? Really? I found that Nimo installed ffdshow (note that Nimo v8 has a buggy ffdshow, v9 has a fixed one), but I *still* couldn't watch XviD files. So it seems to me that ffdshow isn't going to cover all your bases (if it's not a codec pack, then is it some kind of "supercodec" in order to play multiple formats?).

Thanks folks!

ffdshow isn't a codec pack, but it decodes a lot of formats.
I dislike codec packs because they make a mess :)

If u need only to decode, try VLC, MPLAYER or TCPMP, they dont need any installed codec.

Just thought I'd throw two more cents in...

1) Avoid Nimo at ALL costs!

2) Check the wiki. (http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#But_why_the_CCCP_and_not_some_other_codec_pack.3F)

Matroska Pack Full is also a good codec pack. Les than 4mb, with most of formats suported using FFDShow. Never heard nor had any problem with it.

Another option is take a player already with all the codecs, like VLC and TCPMP (mod: you forgot a P in its name).

Hey by the way, folks, just a follow-up.

I found that CCCP works MUCH MUCH better than Nimo.

Thanks a ton!
